5 events to broaden your learning and kickstart your fashion career at AFF

Opportunities too good to miss.

It’s not just the runway shows that have got us thinking Adelaide Fashion Festival presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide is stepping up. This year, the festival will host a series of workshops to help you kickstart your career, or just learn a little more about Australia’s growing fashion industry. And because we hate sending you anywhere unprepared, we’ve picked out the top five industry events we think you should stop by.

Daring and Disruptive lunch with Lisa Messenger

Ever considered starting your own business? The thought can be bloody terrifying but Lisa Messenger gives us hope. She’s founded two successful companies, authored and co-authored 16 books and started up a print magazine (which is now distributed in over 37 countries). Yep, if there’s anyone you should take career advice from, it’s her. The event will see Lisa share her career experiences, giving attendees the chance to learn from her directly. Plus, the workshop comes with a meal from TV chef and Tasting Australia creative director, Simon Bryant, so it’s a no brainer. Get your notebooks ready.

Date: Wednesday October 19
Time: 12pm
Location: Mercedes-Benz Adelaide, Mile End SA

Connecting China Workshop

This one’s for all of you out there looking to connect your label or business with a global market. The Connecting China workshop will see Australian Fashion Labels director, Melanie Flintoft, join a panel of industry identities to discuss working with the Chinese market from wholesale to manufacturing. It’s set to be a small yet powerful insight into one of the world’s most lucrative markets.

Date: Thursday October 20

Fashion Insiders’ Breakfast

The Fashion Insiders’ Breakfast pretty much combines our two favourite things: food and fashion. Held at the AFF Runway (Victoria Square), the breakfast will see a panel of fash insiders – Alyce Tran (The Daily Edited), Tiff Manuell, Tania Debono (The Writing) – and other media discuss pathways into the industry, its future and the role of social media. It’s set to give a general overview of the fashion industry, for anyone wanting to get a handle on the industry as a whole, and an idea about where we’re heading. Delicious breakfast provided by Hilton Adelaide and C Coffee.

Date: Friday October 21
Time: 7.30am
Location: AFF Runway, Victoria Square
Tickets available here.

Fashion’s Future: A TAFE SA Student Showcase

We’re not lying when we say our favourite event at any fashion festival is the student runway. The TAFE SA showcase will share the work of students from a variety of disciplines. Featuring some of the state’s most promising up-and-coming designers, it’s your chance to get a peek into the future of fashion and some serious talent. The show will also present looks by the Premier’s Design Award finalists for 2016.

Date: Saturday October 22
Time: 11.30am
Location: AFF Runway, Victoria Square
