Alexander Wang successfully sued counterfeiters for $90 million

And likely won’t see a cent.

Someone buy this guy a beer.

Alexander Wang has successfully sued nearly 50 defendants for stocking counterfeit Alexander Wang goods across a massive 459 websites. For his efforts, he’s been awarded $90 million in damages.

It’s also $90 million he’ll probably never see.

Unfortunately for Wang, the win is bittersweet. It’s likely he’ll never receive a cent due to the fact these operators are almost impossible to trace.

But it didn’t stop the court making the award. It’s apparently a regular occurrence that courts in the US make futile awards for largely symbolic purposes, to deter future counterfeit activity.

Whether it will operate as an effective deterrent is unclear.

It’s also unclear whether Wang ever expected to receive an actual award, or whether the company was just suing on principle.

The brand’s chief principal officer, Dennis Wang, said:

“Protecting our brand requires maintaining constant vigilance on a global scale as well as taking proactive measures such as sending cease and desist orders directly to domestic and foreign counterfeiters as well as contacting website servers that host counterfeit sites.”

Whatever the case, we’re backing them in.
