Bet you don’t know where the name ‘adidas’ actually came from

Dropping truth bombs.

Few people know the real story behind the name adidas. We bet you don’t either. Despite much speculation, we can confirm the following:

No, it does not stand for All Day I Dream About Sport.

No, it is not named after a Greek God.

No, it has nothing to do with Korn the song A.D.I.D.A.S (All Day I Dream About Sex).

The truth is actually much simpler than that.

The company’s German founder, Adolf Dassler, came up with the name by combining his nickname (Adi) with the first three letters of his last name (Das).

But here’s where things get interesting.

Adidas originally began as Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (translation: Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory) and was run by Adolf and his brother, Rudolf.

A family feud forced the brothers apart, and split the company in two. Adolf took his share and founded Adidas. Rudolf did the same and founded Ruda (also using the initials from his first and last name).

Ruda was soon renamed to Puma, (what?!?!?!?) meaning the world’s biggest shoe competitors were started by the same two brothers.

Earth shattering, we know.
