Eleven young Aussies to keep your eyes on

Ones to watch.

There’s something in the water Down Under. How else can you explain the extreme amount of young talent to come out of our country as of late? From designers to musicians to performers and artists, there’s a whole bunch of under 30s who are doing big things. And we’re pretty impressed.

Apparently so is David Jones. The retailer has handpicked eleven talented Aussies for their latest campaign, ‘Watch This Space’, which celebrates young talent. So without further ado, here’s a list of eleven young Aussies you’ll want to keep your eyes on, according to David Jones.

Who… Gemma O’Brien. What… artist and typographer. Why… Gemma turns fonts into pictures. She’s responsible for the handwritten delight that is Angus & Julia Stone’s logo. You’ll probably also be familiar with her large-scale murals and editorial creations.

Who… UV BOI. What… producer. Why… at 19 years old, Emmanuel John has already toured around Australia and played Spendour in the Grass. He’ll also be touring alongside Jamie XX this summer, so you know he must be sweet.

Who… Mezko. What… musicians. Why… this Sydney-based synth-pop duo loves a bit of disco, but that doesn’t mean they are a disco band by any means. The two-piece is consistently looking for new technologies and picking up new instruments to evolve their sound.

Who… Luen Jacobs. What… DJ. Why… chances are you’ve been to one of Lauren’s parties. She curates dance floors and mix tapes, and was the girl behind Melbourne and Sydney’s Vice parties.

Who… Amrita. What… dancer and choreographer. Why… Amrita is a contemporary dancer and choreographer who spends her free time interviewing musicians and actors. She is also a Bey Dance instructor, and that’s reason enough.

Who… Set Mo. What… DJs. Why… Set Mo will have you dancing, there’s no doubt about that. Their house tracks are so popular that even Diddy (P Diddy? Puff Daddy? Sean Diddy Combes?) caught word and invited them over to his place.

Who… Sophie Lowe. What… actor and musician. Why… Sophie is a double threat. You’ll recognise her face from the film Beautiful Kate, and her voice from Tripe J.

Who… James Chappell. What… director. Why… having originally studied fine arts in photography, James has now bought his skills to music video direction. In the past three years he has been responsible for videos to come from The Bloody Beetroots, Art vs. Science and Tiësto.

Who… Kitty Callaghan. What… artist. Why… Kitty loves to clash. She’s been making collages since she was 12 and still makes everything by hand. She has worked with Ellery and even interviewed Mac DeMarco.

Who… KLP. What… DJ/producer. Why… You’ve probably heard KLP’s dance party mixes on Triple J. Kristy Lee Peters is so good at spinning those tracks that she was recently signed to EMI.

Who… Amy Pejkovic. What… athlete and model. Why… most of us would probably give up after being diagnosed with a brain tumour at 19, but not Amy. After missing out on the 2012 London Olympics due to her illness, Amy is training hard for Rio in 2016. You may also recognise her from a number of Lorna Jane campaigns or on the runway for Alice McCall, Ellery and others.
