Meet Ava Barbie, the coolest Barbie doll yet

Academy Award-nominated director Ava DuVernay gets her own Barbie.

I think we can safely say that 2015 has been the year of Barbie. We’ve had Paris, Bella Hadid and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley all embody the famous doll. The notoriously high-heeled Barbie was also finally given the chance to wear flats, teamed up with Moschino for a sell out range and got an exhibition entirely dedicated to her.

But now the icon is getting perhaps the coolest transformation of all.

Earlier this year, Mattel announced they would be producing a range of Sheroes Barbies: dolls which take the likeness of female heroes who inspire girls by breaking boundaries and expanding possibilities for women everywhere.

The one-off dolls, which included the youngest female editor of a national fashion magazine Eva Chen and five-year-old fashion designer Sydney Keiser, were to be auctioned off for charity. Some people didn’t quite agree with this plan though, with fans of Ava DuVernay complaining that they couldn’t get their hands on the doll.

Surprisingly Mattel listened, with whole range of Barbies who embody the Academy Award-nominated director and activist going on sale yesterday.

All of DuVernay’s proceeds from the sale of the Ava Barbie will be donated to Color Of Change and Witness.org.

If you like what you see, you might be disappointed though, the Ava Barbie has already sold out.
