Meet the graduate already designing for Target

Her collection launches today.

Target has been upping its style stakes recently, collaborating with the likes of Dion Lee and Danni Minogue through their Designers for Target program. But now it’s taking style to a whole new level, supporting emerging talent with Sydney University of Technology graduate Rachael Zheng.

Zheng is the first designer to kick off the brand’s Australian Stars program.

Target Managing Director, Stuart Machin said the retailer’s Australian Stars program officially recognises and celebrates home-grown talent, while offering high-end designs at affordable prices to Australians.

Just ask Zheng. The Sydney graduate was selected from a pool of 12 finalists who participated in the 2015 Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival National Graduate Showcase. The show is sponsored by Target and produced in conjunction with the Designers for Target program.

The Australian Stars program is all about harnessing great local talent, without leaving a hole in our wallets. And we love the sound of that.

Rachel Zheng for Target has a bit of a ’70s poolside charm presented in 16-pieces, ideal for the coming summer.

The collection as described by Zheng, “is really chic, but it’s simple to wear and there’s a sort of ease about it.”

When designing the collection, her priorities were comfort and quality. “The quality and construction carried out with each individual item is fantastic. We have incorporated premium fabrications including linens, allowing quality garments to be made accessible.”

She also featured high-neck detailing, clean lines and relaxed tailoring, not to mention beautiful capes and a retro print she designed herself.

And if you were wondering how to wear the new collection, Zheng suggests the linen sleeveless vest. “It’s perfect for layering… it’s so versatile,” she says.

If vests aren’t your thing, “wear the sheer pieces over the colour pieces, just so a little colour pops through.” According to Zheng, it’s all about being confident. “Challenge yourself a little bit, push the boundaries a little bit, be brave.”

And if you’re a young designer that can picture their name on a Target collection, you’re in luck.

The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival is inviting eligible graduates from around the country to apply for next year’s Showcase.

Twelve graduates that demonstrate a unique vision and excellence in innovation will be selected to take part in the Festival-produced runway presentation next March. Applications are open now and need to be submitted by November 23 via the VAMFF website.

The Rachael Zheng for Target womenswear collection is ranged between $29 and $79 and launches in 34 stores and online today.
