Nessie Croft is a freelance fashion practitioner currently based in Melbourne. The impressive young lady has just completed her final year in the RMIT Fashion Design BA with Honours program, focusing on the relationship between materiality and the wearer.
The result is Jacque, a collection that challenges perceptions of traditional textiles and makes our own achievements feel a little insignificant.
If you had to describe your collection to someone without showing them, what would you say?
I would say bold with an eclectic colour palette, where garment silhouettes have been derived from historical references and then collaged together to create contemporary forms.
If you had to choose one look from the collection, what would it be?
That’s an incredibly difficult question as I’m continually exploring different variations amongst the collection. But if I had to choose, I would say Jacque’s suit, which is the full-striped outfit and is the main character in my narrative.
What has been the most challenging part of designing your collection?
To stop designing! Also to find a balance among my colour palette and fabrics, because I’m always trying to include more.
What are you most excited about right now?
The next instalment of my collection, where I’m introducing some incredible textures and fabrications that should bring the whole project together!

Martin Margiela, always.
Favourite fashion era?
Probably the 1980s, it was the start of a huge shift in the fashion system.
What movie best describes your life?
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion haha.
