Take a look at the designer making period-inspired jewellery
Spot on.
Lili Murphy-Johnson is 22 years old and already making bloody bold jewellery statements (literally).
She is inspired by menstruation, using our time of the month to design red jewels on white dresses, rings and different glittering pieces.
But why? Murphy-Johnson is exposing the idea of period-shame and wishes to reduce the stigma attached to it.
She told Vice, “I wanted to create beautiful jewellery out of something that is conventionally seen by society to be shameful. Periods should be a normal thing to talk about, but so often we feel embarrassed. I wanted my collection to take on the quality of jewellery that I like, but using the qualities of that jewellery to show people that periods can be beautiful. People don’t usually think they can be.”
Murphy-Johnson is currently working under luxury jeweller Shaune Leane, despite only recently graduating from University of the Arts in London.
She was inspired by her own PMS and wanted to explore how periods affect the body on an emotional and physical level.
Her pieces have already attracted global attention, with some being sold to Sweden, the US and Britain.
“We need to be able to talk about periods more openly so that we don’t have these problems. That’s what I want to do with my jewellery. I want to create something that can be worn without shame or disgust.”
