The 10 best FREE events you can attend during MSFW

No money, No problems.

If you are an avid fan of being cool (which we know you are), you may remember the article we wrote on impressing your friends at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. If so, prepare for an even more exciting read.

Now what’s more exciting than looking cool to your friends? Spending zero money doing it of course.

Here’s our list of the 10 best FREE events happening at MSFW. Prepare to impress your friends.

1. The first FREE event is the Makers and Shakers Emerging Designer Market. New and independent designers will be selling their clothing and accessories throughout the festival. Running from Friday August 26 to Friday August 2, the event will be housed in the Old Met Shop of Melbourne Town Hall. Suggest this to your friends as a fun afternoon activity, because markets are cool, therefore you will look cool too.

2. Beauty haven Mecca will be holding a FREE pop-up beauty wonderland at The Hub during MSFW. Attendees can feel pampered by the professional makeup artists on-hand, creating complimentary runway looks. Perfect if you have a Tinder date you need to glow-up for, or you just want to feel glam AF like the goddess you are.

3. With the makeup sorted, the Kevin Murphy pop-up is here for your hair. Visit Tthe Hub to sample and buy this season’s latest hair products, consulting with the Kevin Murphy stylists to help you achieve the looks at home. There might even be a Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer there. A gal can dream.

4. On Sunday August 28, MSFW will host Family Day at The Hub in City Square. The space will feature FREE programming for the entire family between 10am and 5pm, including a Huxbaby runway and a range of kid’s activities. Face painting, craft activities, a dress-up photo booth, we don’t think anyone will need much convincing.

5. Are you sick of the paying top dollar for the NGV Fashion exhibitions? Well here’s a chance to save those pennies. The next FREE event is a fashion exhibition presented by the final year students of Box Hill Institute. Titled Waste Not, Want Not, the event aims to raise awareness of sustainable practices in fashion. Stroll into the space from Friday August 26 to Monday August 29, 11am – 4pm.

6. Is the dapper man in your life constantly complaining about being dragged along to MSFW events with you? Well, prepare for the complaints to stop. For the third year running, Lord Coconut is pleased to present the Melbourne Cufflink Exhibition and Student Acquisitive Prize. The space will feature handcrafted cufflinks made by jewellery students from Melbourne Polytechnic and RMIT, with one jeweller awarded $500 for their work.

7. If you love attending runways, but would rather spend the money at a Chin Chin dinner, listen up. On Friday August 26, Little Bourke Street will transform into a FREE runway like no other. Featuring bold foliage and an innovative set design, the cityscape will become the backdrop to looks from Emporium Melbourne designers. This will give you plenty to talk about while you wait for a table at Chin Chin.

8. They say knowledge is power, and Melbourne Spring Fashion week wants you to be as powerful as possible. A panel conversation will be held on Wednesday August 31 at The RMIT Design Hub in Carlton. Titled ‘The Future for Designers and the Next Generation,’ industry leaders will focus on where the industry is heading, the role of education and where the opportunities are at.

9. With the Spring Racing Carnival fast approaching, we know you’ll need some millinery tips for when you’re papped in The Birdcage. MSFW is giving you an exclusive opportunity to visit Louise Macdonald’s millinery studio in the iconic Nicholas Building, which overlooks the grand St Paul’s Cathedral. You’ll score some tips on how to find a hat or headpiece for any occasion, ways to wear an array of styles, and hear suggestions on how to style your hair to create different looks. This info will prove helpful come Derby Day when you need to look glam for the gram.

10. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t have fond memories of Sovereign Hill. In this MSFW first, Costume Manager at Sovereign Hill, Erin Santamaria, will enlighten audiences as to the recent process of replacing the 1850s military uniforms worn by the iconic Redcoat soldiers. He will guide you through a forensic investigation of the regalia’s technical specifications, culture and heritage value; and will compare the modern and historic appropriations of sartorial style. Perfect for those who love costume design, as well as the blending of history and fashion.
