There’s something so exciting about packing for a trip, a feeling that goes beyond looking forward to reaching your destination. You’re faced with a choice: you can pack for comfort and function (usually my pick), you can choose to dress like the most ideal version of yourself or you can be someone else entirely.

Travel gives us a chance to explore the world but it also offers an opportunity to explore ourselves. Do we want to blend into the spaces we enter or do we want to stand out?

I’m nosy, so I reached out to some of our favourite faces in fashion to get a taste for what people have been packing on their recent trips. From the streets of New York to the beaches of Greece to the runways of Sydney, here’s what Australian fashion people are wearing.

I just got back from a dreamy New York trip with my bestie Eliza and one of my favourite looks was from a day spent wandering around Soho. It was one of those perfect days nearing the end of Winter, cool in the shade but warm in the sun, so I layered a dramatic faux fur coat over a monochrome, slightly grungy outfit.

We did a ton of walking, so my Asics GT-2160s were a comfy (but still cool) choice. I paired them with my Drmers Club baggy jeans (can’t get enough of them lately) and my trusty thrifted Coach bag from Japan.

We started at Blank Street for banana bread matchas (controversial opinion: Melbourne still does it better), shopped everywhere from Reformation to 2nd Street and tried Leon’s Bagels. The day ended at Enly Cafe for tiramisu lattes and too many photo strips at the Old Friend Photo Booth. So worth it.

I wore this mostly pre-loved outfit while visiting one of my best friends in Christchurch, New Zealand. When travelling, I have to have (at least) one extra outfit and this was it! The Christchurch divas definitely appreciated it, too.

I wore this Serafina suit to Australian Fashion Week and the moment I put it on, something shifted. It was tailored, structured and unapologetically bold. So was I. I’d been so excited to wear it but when I arrived and realised I could count on one hand how many plus-size people were there, I suddenly felt small.

I’ve never liked the phrase ‘fake it till you make it’ but this suit held the power for me until I could catch up to it. I didn’t need to force confidence. It found me. People were turning their heads. I could feel it. For once, I let myself take that in. Fashion Week has long felt like a space I had to squeeze myself into, both literally and metaphorically. But not this time. This look was a declaration. It said, “I’m here. I belong. And I look incredible doing it.”

The week was full of big moments but this outfit brought me back to the ground. It brought me back to myself. It reminded me that I’m allowed to take up space and when I do, it’s powerful.

Determined to make the most of every last second of autumnal sunshine, I recently ran away to Healesville for a cosy weekend full of open fires, leaf stomping and beautiful wine. Country getaways mean I’m not packing my dressiest outfits. Instead, I’m focusing on casual classics that can take me from a quiet night at the Healesville Hotel to some spectacular fine dining at Levantine Hill Estate.

My focus isn’t so much on being stylish on holidays but more just wearing what makes me happiest, which is why I more or less lived in this vintage leather jacket given to me by my grandma. It’s warm, timeless and so easy to layer over everything I packed for the trip. I wore it to the Four Pillars distillery paired with a vintage denim skirt, leather boots, wool tights and a Uniqlo merino sweater (a forever wardrobe staple) for a casual look that ticked all the boxes. I get so many compliments on the jacket and I just love that it’s been worn on over 40 years of adventures and still has so much life left in it.

In Japan, cherry blossom season is usually from April onwards but I was incredibly lucky to have my trip in March coincide with this year’s early bloom. It made the trip so memorable in so many ways and despite finding myself confused on how to dress because of the unpredictable weather, I was constantly inspired by such creative, cool street style everywhere I went.

I found this pristine old season Ganni quilted jacket on eBay a few weeks before the trip and it served me very well in Japan, as did my trusty Henne jeans and loafers. I just love the colour and details of the jacket and the collar frames my face perfectly. I’m a very sentimental person and even though I’ll have this jacket for many years to come, it’ll just be one of those pieces I’ll always associate with Japan and the memories from this bucket list trip.

It’s simple but I always reach for this thrifted dress on a summer holiday. It’s the perfect piece to transition from day to night. During the day, it’s easy to put on some sandals, grab my beach bag and stay cool. I can also dress it up so easily for a nice dinner with heels and a jacket.

This trip was a happy accident for my partner and me. A friend had booked the wrong date and couldn’t cancel, so she gave it to us as a gift. We’re currently based in Athens, Greece, so we quickly packed our suitcases, hopped on the ferry and headed to Milos to enjoy the famous Sarakiniko beach. It was a dream!
