Your guide to what’s next.

Nothing sends me home earlier than realising I’ve made the wrong shoe choice. Truthfully, I’d rather cut my time short and skip the blisters than trudge around awkwardly any day. After all, ‘beauty is pain’ is an outdated adage.

While comfort has never taken a back seat, the emphasis on it has not been as pronounced as it is today. From 2023’s revival of slip-on ballet flats to soft jelly sandals, people (even fashion-focused ones) want more than just a hard-to-walk-in statement shoe. However, picking between supportive and trendy – while still staying true to your personal style – can be tricky.

For many, the struggle lies in finding that delicate balance. But fear not – iconic Australian footwear label Betts is bridging the gap between comfort and style with its Summer Collection, prioritising flats and rounded toes over sky-high silhouettes. With this edit as the inspo, find a round-up of the hottest trending footwear styles for 2024 below (according to the internet).

Sandals and flip-flops

Open-toed shoes and thongs (or flip-flops) were spotted gracing the runways of recent fashion weeks, from Valentino to Burberry. Often paired with minimalistic, transitional pieces – like breezy tailored shirts and blazers – the footwear made the looks feel more relaxed. This trend exudes a laidback air, making it a flexible option for the in-between months like spring and autumn.

Betts Summer Collection features an ultra-comfortable version of this look at an affordable cost. Key styles include the black Aruba Leather Sandals with braided detailing, and the Marbella Footbed Sandals in versatile shades of black, bone and tan.

Rounded-toe silhouettes

Although pointed-toe shoes dominated 2023, the rounded-toe is making a comeback in 2024, heralding a shift toward a softer, more undone aesthetic. Seen on the runways of Valentino and Stella McCartney, this season’s shoes are moving away from sharp lines in favour of a more classic style. And if you want a rounded toe that still provides an edge, Betts’ Harlem Sandals feature a chunky sole and functional double-strap velcro detailing.

Slouched boots

Biker boots were everywhere this year, with versions of Miu Miu’s buckle-heavy style reimagined by brands everywhere. While I’m not expecting the moto boot to go anywhere, a more slouched silhouette is definitely in store 2024. The trend was popularised in the early 2000s –a and trend that goes around, comes around.

Different versions of slouchy boots were spotted on the runways of Alexander McQueen and Versace. So you’re not a fan of the skin-tight sock boot or loose biker style, a slouched boot offers an alternative, plus extra wiggle room. The emphasis on wider, baggier styles allows for comfort in a way that’s still cool but understated.

Flat everything

Flats took centre stage on the runways this year, and this season continues to ditch heels in favour of a short girl summer. Whether you opt for sneakers, boots or neutral-toned slides, comfort is the key to next season’s stride. So instead of preemptively covering your heels in Band-Aids, buckle up or slip into something that won’t leave your feet swollen by the end of any night.

This coming season, it’s not just about what looks good – it’s about what feels good, marking a definitive step towards a future where style and relaxation coexist seamlessly in every wardrobe. As we bid adieu to the era of teetering on stilettos, there’s a collective sigh of relief. In 2024, on-trend footwear is not synonymous with sore arches and cramped toes.
