H&M appoints diversity leader following its controversial image
“We are listening”.
H&M has now appointed a diversity leader in the wake of the ‘coolest monkey in the jungle’ controversy.
The Swedish retailer was accused of racism after it posted an ad online of a black child dressed in a hoodie reading ‘coolest monkey in the jungle’.
The incident caused a public backlash against H&M, which was forced to temporarily close all its South African stores due to protests. Many high-profile celebrities also called out the brand, with The Weeknd cutting his ties with the retailer.
In a Facebook post, H&M stated: “The recent incident was entirely unintentional, but it demonstrates so clearly how big our responsibility is as a global brand.”
“Our commitment to addressing diversity and inclusiveness is genuine, therefore we have appointed a global leader, in this area, to drive our work forward.”
The brand is yet to announce who the diversity leader is.
