UPDATE: According to the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC), Ellery is now in liquidation just days after changing its name to its Australian Company Number (ACN 124 374 358 Pty Ltd). A notice to wind up the company was filed on April 18. Katherine Elizabeth Barnet and Hugh Armenis have been appointed liquidators.

One of Australia’s most successful fashion exports is pulling out of the local market.

Kym Ellery has announced she will close the Australian arm of her business, citing the impact of high manufacturing costs and the country’s isolation from international fashion capitals.

According to Australian Financial Review, Kym closed her two Sydney stores on April 16, and made 22 staff redundant two days later. The Elleryland headquarters (located in Chippendale) is also set to close.

“I am very proud to have built an independent, globally recognised fashion house from my home, Australia, [but] it has not been without its challenges,” Kym said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, running the production out of Australia proved to be commercially unsustainable. As a result of some poor strategic decisions that were made, and the high cost of manufacturing in Australia, we have been left with no choice but to close Elleryland, our production facility and Australian operations company.”

AFR reports that 95 per cent of the brand’s customer based is located outside of Australia, making the choice to shut down local operations a tough but logical move.

“I have always championed Australian manufacturing, and this decision was incredibly difficult to make,” said Kym. “I am deeply grateful for the dedication and support of everyone involved.”

The brand is now in final negotiations of appointing a new global distributor, which will oversee production in Europe.

We’ll miss you Ellery.
