Gifts that keep giving.
Mother’s Day is quickly approaching (May 10, in case you’re wondering) and while a champagne breakfast always goes down a treat, gifting your mum – or mother figure – something extra special speaks volumes.
Holly, FJ’s Branded Content and Production Coordinator, has one mum and two step mums to celebrate. Despite getting clear orders via text (“Please don’t get us anything. we will be annoyed if you do.”) we know if anyone deserves a thoughtful gift, it’s them.

And let’s be real, mums are fun to buy for because they come to us for recommendations anyway. From favourite candles to binge-worthy books and cosy slippers, these are the gifts we’ve been mulling over to buy our mums this year.
Euphoria massage from Ma Saj
Picked by: Holly Villagra, Fashion Journal’s Branded Content and Production Coordinator
My mum works incredibly hard, arguably too hard, and it’s only when she’s put into a pre-booked, enforced relaxation situation that she truly unwinds. This Mother’s Day, I want to gift her a voucher for the Euphoria massage by Ma Saj, a divine studio in Melbourne. Combining breathwork, aromatherapy and a full-body massage, it’s designed for people who are ready to just flop and melt, which is exactly what this woman needs.

Friends with Frank Yuki scarf

Picked by: Daisy Henry, Fashion Journal’s Assistant Editor
This Friends with Frank scarf is such a chic, understated Mother’s Day gift. It’s triangle-shaped and made from soft merino wool, so while it adds warmth, it’s not too bulky. I can see her cafe-hopping on weekends with it tied around her shoulders.

Diptyque Lys candle

Picked by: Lara Daly, Fashion Journal’s Senior Editor
Oriental lilies are my mum’s favourite flowers. Growing up, my siblings and I would always take turns delivering her a bunch every Mother’s Day, along with breakfast in bed. Since we don’t live in the same country, I’m sending her the candle version. Lys by Diptyque smells exactly like a juicy bouquet of fresh-cut lilies and lasts a lot longer, so whenever she lights it she’ll think of me. While I’m at Mecca, I’ll be picking up Diptyque’s new Rhubarbe candle for myself!

Aesop Blue Chamomile Facial Hydrating Masque
Picked by: Daisy Henry, Fashion Journal’s Assistant Editor
This gift won’t come as a surprise to her at all. I’ve given her this mask several times already over various birthdays, Christmases and Mother’s Days – basically whenever she runs out. I got it by chance one year as I knew she loved Aesop and it has become a tradition at this point. It smells divine and feels so gentle on your skin.

Simétrie Gaze belt

Picked by: Holly Villagra, Fashion Journal’s Branded Content and Production Coordinator
My mum loves an accessory with a twist, something that adds a bit of oomph to her work outfits. I’ve been eyeing the Gaze belt in Black Rock from Melbourne label Simétrie. With its eye-shaped brass buckle and handmade craftsmanship in the brand’s Brunswick-based atelier, she would appreciate the luxurious, handcrafted detail of the piece.

‘Yesteryear’ by Caro Claire Burke
Picked by: Daisy Henry, Fashion Journal’s Assistant Editor
I’m a firm believer that the best way to spend a cold weekend morning is curled up in bed with a good book – coincidentally, so is my mum. She’s almost as online as I am, so I think she’ll love this fictional take on the rise of famous American tradwives. It borders on being a bit of a psychological thriller, too, making it perfectly bingeable.

Hommey Sheepskin slippers

Picked by: Lara Daly, Fashion Journal’s Senior Editor
This is kind of an in-joke because my mum always buys me and my sister slippers (she’s a practical queen) so I thought I’d return the favour. These sheepskin slippers from Hommey in hazelnut colour are so cosy and cute – and at a very reasonable price point, might I add.

Casa Della Silk mulberry silk pillowcase
Picked by: Lara Daly, Fashion Journal’s Senior Editor
Like me, my mum’s obsessed with good bedding so I know she’ll appreciate some luxurious new pillowcases. I’m a big believer in sleeping on mulberry silk – not satin – as it’s breathable and better for you skin and hair. These Casa Della Silk pillowcases are heaven to sleep on and come in the most gorgeous packaging.

Mejuri Brioche hoops

Picked by: Holly Villagra, Fashion Journal’s Branded Content and Production Coordinator
My mum has been a devoted silver jewellery wearer for most of my life, but recently she’s made the switch to gold. Inspired by perfectly risen bread, these Brioche hoops from Mejuri are a simple, everyday piece she can dress up or down. Plus, I love my mum and I love bread, so it just feels right.
