A week in work outfits with Naarm-based musician, Miss Kaninna

WORDS BY IZZY WIGHT

Days at the studio, industry events, interviews and gigs.

Working in a creative role, it can be difficult to know how to dress for the day. Instead of having a set uniform of crisp white shirts and tailored black pants (as much as I love both), an ever-changing schedule means every morning requires a set of questions. Am I running around, or just sitting at my desk? Do I need to dress specifically for a project? And most importantly, will I be in the background of someone’s TikTok?

For proud Yorta Yorta, Djadja Wurrung, Kalkadoon and Yirendali sovereign woman, Miss Kaninna, a ‘work week’ combines days at the studio, industry events, interviews and gigs. Blending pop, R&B and rap, the Naarm-based musician has just released a new single, ‘Pinnacle Bitch’.

On her wardrobe, Miss Kaninna says “80 per cent” has been thrifted or given to her by friends and family. “Naarm has such amazing op shops and since living here, I’ve been able to explore my style a lot more. I am very grateful to have access to affordable clothes. I have to get all my other pieces specifically for shows and gigs, but I’m working on learning how to use the sewing machine to start making my own costumes.” Read on to see a week in her work outfits.

Sunday

This was a writing and market day. The top is from Mavromati, the skirt is Noah’s (my partner) and the shoes are from Etsy. I love that it’s getting warmer now, and trips to the fruit and veg market on the way to writing sessions are so much fun. I love my Mavromati crochet top because the back has a different colour pattern to the front, so I can swap it around for a different look. I like to be comfortable but cute.

Monday

When I’m in the studio, I just need to be comfortable. These shorts are thrifted denim, and the shirt is an old thrifted surf shirt. Thrifted denim is always so much more comfortable and sits better than new denim… I love wearing these shorts or some track pants in the studio.

Tuesday

This was an event look for the Victorian Music Awards. For this look I was going for quite a femme look, I really liked how low the skirt was sitting so I wanted to also have a small top look to really accentuate that [this thrifted corset]. And who doesn’t love a corset?

Wednesday

For the airport, it’s the same as the studio – I like to be comfortable but also look good. The top is from Noah Johnson’s label (@derecylcer) and the pants are thrited. Usually, I get off the plane and go straight to an interview or gig or something – so I like to dress for work when I go to the airport. This jacket, in particular, is upcycled from old flower bags.

Friday

I like to get as much skin out as possible for my stage looks, cause why the fuck not? As young women, we are always told when we can and when we can’t be sexual or show skin. This particular look was fun because it was so cold for the gig, but I still wanted to look cute… I opted for leather pants [from Neon Hart] to keep me warm. It did the trick.
