H&M just committed to using 100% sustainable materials by 2030

A mighty claim.

The H&M Group has just undertaken a new commitment to sustainable practice, and we are pretty damn impressed.

Released today, the group’s Sustainability Report 2016 outlines several goals the company will be undertaking, including a commitment to using 100% recycled and other sustainably-sourced materials by 2030. It’s a huge deal, especially considering the number of sustainable materials used in 2016 was only 26%.

It’s all in a bid to make the H&M Group – of which H&M, Cos and Cheap Monday are subsidiaries – climate-positive by 2040.

The report also details where the H&M’s environmental practice currently stands.

  • In 2016, 43% of H&M’s total cotton use came from sustainable sources. The goal is to use only such cotton by 2020.
  • H&M used recycled polyester equivalent of more than 180 million PET bottles in 2016.
  • In 2016, the H&M Group reduced its CO2 emissions by 47% compared to 2015.

The group has also committed to using 100% renewable energy and as its stands, 96% of its operations are already powered by green energy (up from 47% in 2015).

But, it’s not just the environment that H&M Group is trying to positively impact. It has also committed to scale up its Fair Living Wage program, which will see continued wage management at supplier factories and training for workers.

“We want to use our size and scale to lead the change towards circular and renewable fashion while making our company even more fair and equal. This is why we have developed a new strategy aiming to take our sustainability work to the next level,” says Head of Sustainability at H&M Group, Anna Gedda.

“We want to lead by example, pave the way and try new things – both when it comes to the environmental and social side – to ultimately make fashion sustainable and sustainability fashionable. Our climate positive strategy is one way of doing this.”
