It’s never easy trying to come up with new outfit combinations for the working week. Instead of having a set uniform, an ever-changing schedule means every morning requires a set of questions. Am I running around, or just sitting at my desk? Do I need to dress specifically for a project? And what am I meant to do when my favourite pants are in the wash?

Given that it can be a daily struggle, we’re asking our favourite local creatives for outfit inspiration. This week, we’re peeking into the wardrobe of Nissa Ryan, a Melbourne-based freelance marketing consultant with clients like July, Bread Beauty and Resting on her roster.

With eight years of experience under her belt, Nissa recently took the leap into full-time freelancing, working three days from home and the rest from an office. But remote work hasn’t changed how she dresses. On days she’s in her home office, she says that feeling put together is a non-negotiable. For her, that means putting on makeup and styling an outfit worthy of her TikTok audience before she sends her first email. “I like a strong morning routine to shift me into the work mindspace,” she explains.

A believer in investment pieces, Nissa’s working wardrobe balances classic designer pieces from Vivienne Westwood with basics from local brands like Deiji Studios and Assembly Label, with secondhand skirts from Swop and Fugu Wears thrown in the mix.

Monday

Making the most of the warm weather (while we have it in Melbourne), I popped on a comfy outfit for a busy day of catching up on client emails, socials and reporting to start the week. I like to invest in incredibly versatile pieces that suit my body shape, like this Vivienne Westwood T-shirt. My jeans are a super-soft barrel-leg design from Neuw Denim, a great runaround pant that looks put together but feels super comfy. The shoes are my partner’s grandma’s, passed down to me, a cute little heeled ballet flat that is surprisingly comfortable.

Tuesday

Because I work for myself, I like a strong morning routine to shift me into the work mindspace. One of my non-negotiables is always putting on an outfit I feel good in and doing my makeup. Everyone’s different, but that’s how I feel ready to work. Today, I had a few errands to run between hours spent hunched over my laptop, so I wore this super-breathable Bec and Bridge top with cotton cargo pants and Havaianas.

Wednesday

Mid-week, I’m usually in Zoom meetings for work in progress or strategising content schedules for the following fortnight. Today, I wore this Deiji Studios frilly top that feels like summer and my trusty Benni skirt pants that I wear at least once a week.

Thursday

One of my clients is Resting. I work out of their office twice a week. When I’m in the office, my days are jam-packed. Today, I had four castings for an upcoming shoot and two meetings. I like to layer when I go into the office in case I get a little cold, and this Assembly Label V-neck sweater is the perfect lightweight knit for that. This vintage skirt from Fugu Wears is one of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe; it instantly makes me feel put together. I paired the outfit with my stomping boots from Steve Madden, and I was dressed and ready for a busy day!

Friday

My last outfit is a variation of the day before. I like a baggy long sleeve when I’m settling in for a long period of laptop time, whether I’m working on upcoming activations for store openings or organising influencer stays for a client in the travel and hotel industry. As a consultant, I often work across three or four different industries at once, which I love! This top is just a super oversized cotton shirt from Glassons. I paired it with this skirt from The Row (an amazing find from Swop) and my stomping boots.

Keep up with Nissa here.
