Posture Studio is the Melbourne label with a focus on high-performance garments

WORDS BY FASHION JOURNAL

“Posture is where creativity meets performance.”

While we’re used to pulling on some combination of leggings, bike shorts, sports bras and sweatbands for exercise, it’s not often we consider performance wear in our everyday. Founders of Melbourne-based label Posture Studio, Dylan Negrine and Liam Holmes, began considering the place of high-performance garments in our wardrobes during the height of the pandemic.

In a period where many of us struggled to find the motivation to move, Dylan and Liam crafted a label dedicated to finding the balance between technical performance wear and contemporary fashion. The pair’s collection features compression tops overlaid with intricate patterns, silky printed boxer shorts and oversized graphic hoodies; created with slow fashion principles in mind.

As long-time collaborators, Dylan and Liam run their practice-based label from their Johnston Street studio, where each piece is thoughtfully crafted on a made-to-order basis. Below, Liam speaks on traditional craft, transparency and collaboration.

How did the label get started? Talk us through the process and the challenges.

As long-time collaborators, our synergy has been organic and harmonious. Having [had] success in the past working on projects [together] a project like Posture was always inevitable. Establishing a brand amidst the global pandemic presented unique challenges, most of which we, along with the majority, had no experience navigating. It required us to be patient and to trust our process. We always try to keep this in mind.

What were you trying to achieve from the project at the time? How has this evolved and what are you trying to communicate through the brand now?

Initially, Posture Studio was a built in reaction to the current state of the local and global industry. The lack of ethical considerations and [the] need for a more intimate connection with clothing motivated us to establish a business that is built on ethics and transparency.

How would you describe Posture Studio to someone who’s never seen it before?
