“I want people to leave feeling like they have experienced something, not just visited a store.”

It’s official. REALISM has permanently set up shop in the bustling halls of Melbourne Central. Following several successful pop-ups around the city, the Australian streetwear label is here to stay, and the energy it’s bringing is electric. Last Saturday, over 200 eager fans lined up as early as 4.30am to be among the first to see its cave-inspired storefront.

Queues of this magnitude aren’t unusual for REALISM. The brand’s past pop-ups and events have attracted people from around the country vying for a chance to score items like its powder-pink Glimmer Zip hoodies or logo T-shirts celebrating the Year of the Horse. But this opening drew fans into a much cooler, more mysterious environment.

The natural flow of the space guides customers deeper, past mirrors engulfed by rock walls, designed alongside professional artists to mimic the look of, well, a cave. As they venture further, huge screens featuring phoenixes, dragons and aeroplanes shift along with their movement.

Harry Wallace, REALISM’s Head of Design and Creative Director, says every inch of the store is intentionally immersive. Inspired by Disney-esque world-building, the shop features hidden details to spark curiosity and wonder. “The cave is designed to pull people out of their day-to-day routine and into something more transportive, immersive and inspiring,” he explains.

A striking, metal REALISM logo takes centre stage, boldly set into rock like The Sword in the Stone. An underground DJ booth replaces a traditional counter. The result is unforgettable, with customer experience clearly at the forefront of the design.

REALISM’s community has, and will continue to be, at the centre of the brand’s evolution. People have shown up for the brand in a big way, and Harry is determined to do the same in return. The visual impact of the store – in fact, the very existence of the store itself – creates a connection in a way even the most well-designed website can’t.

So far, the eight months of painstaking planning and design have paid off. Visitors on opening day were buzzing with excitement to experience the new space, the clothes, and simply being there together. The first few in line received launch-exclusive merch, while the rest were able to play a game of spin-the-wheel for a chance to win up to $250 to shop the brand’s collection of jersey cotton T-shirts, fleece sweatpants and emblazoned hoodies in-store.

“I always wanted the space to feel larger than life, almost like stepping onto a film set or into a theme park. Seeing people respond to that feeling in real time was really special. I am incredibly proud of what the team created and what we were able to bring to life together.”

The concept reflects REALISM’s own identity. Over his two-year tenure as Creative Director, Harry has been ushering the brand into ‘more progressive, considered and worldly territory’. REALISM’s permanent presence in Melbourne is a physical expression of the direction Harry sees the brand moving creatively, signalling a new era as a boundary-pushing, world-building force to be reckoned with.
