How the team at Stache salon get dressed for work

What’s the secret to looking put-together when you’re on your feet all day?

Since I moved back to Melbourne two years ago, I’ve been religiously getting my hair done at Stache. When it’s time for my quarterly cut, I walk away not only with a perfect blowout but my head filled with new outfit ideas after eyeing the teams’ flawless outfits.

If you’ve had the pleasure of getting your hair done at Stache, you know it’s a utopia. Tucked away off Lygon Street in Brunswick East, the salon is home to a team of stylists that might be some of the coolest people I’ve ever seen. Which makes sense, considering they’re aways first miles ahead when it comes to hair trends.

But for a job that requires almost all day spent on your feet, snipping hair, mixing dyes and making everyone else look their best, the team always manage to look impossibly sleek. Curious to know how they do it (and because I didn’t want to be that creep taking sneaky photos of everyones outfits at my appointment), I asked eight people at Stache to step me through how they approach workwear.

Stephen, Owner and Director Stylist

I channel ’70s to ’80s ‘disco Marlboro man’ energy through sleek, European tailoring and modern silhouettes. I like a balance of vintage and contemporary, blending classic menswear pieces in denim, leather and crisp shirting. Think Our Legacy, Acne Studios, Dries Van Noten and Lemaire, filtered through a timeless, quietly confident lens.

Rachel, Emerging Stylist

My style is pretty minimal and casual. I love a good pair of loose jeans paired with a small top. I love shopping secondhand and from small Melbourne designers, my newest addition is this bolero by Feeath.

Shakirra, Social Media Manager

I’d say my style is pretty minimal and almost everything I wear is secondhand. I’m very much a pants or jeans girl, which I like to pair with a chic Italian leather kitten heel. I’m obsessed with buying small or cropped jackets, so you’ll probably see me wearing one from my small but growing collection!

Jonny, Salon Educator and Master Stylist

I love classic silhouettes and pieces that will last a long time. From button-ups to tailored pants, I have a lot of Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto in my wardrobe.

Caylin, Emerging Stylist

I’d say my style changes quite ofte  but at the moment, I prioritise comfort when it comes to work. I love layering pieces and shopping secondhand or buying from local designers.

Jordan, Advanced Stylist

I change my style a lot! I wear a lot of baggy clothes, anything from gothic to skater energy. I can go from wearing all black to a light, relaxed outfit like the one in this photo.

Alisha, Senior Stylist

My style usually showcases a little pop of colour. I love a cute cropped top paired with a skirt-over-pants combo (guilty). And my trusty Docs always get me through the day.

Ronica, Advanced Stylist

My style is fluid and minimal, with lots of black. I like clothes that last a long time.
