Follow suit.

The suit-and-tie ensemble has long been a staple in men’s wardrobes. Perhaps that’s why it always feels somewhat subversive when women opt for a matching, tailored look. Whether it was Bianca Jagger in her iconic YSL wedding suit in the ’70s, or Julia Roberts accepting a Golden Globe in her oversized Armani suit in the ’90s, the classic two-piece carries an air of authority.

Taylor Alexandra Jones has long been an advocate for adding a suit to your regular outfit rotation. Known formally by her online alias, ‘Miss Taylor the Tailor’, her love for tailoring has led her to the creation of her eponymous made-to-order label, offering custom suits that feel both timeless and modern.

“A tailored suit is the most versatile piece you can own,” she says. “Worn together, it’s instantly polished. Split into separates, it becomes your most adaptable wardrobe tool.” Arguably, it’s the one outfit that you can wear to a boardroom meeting, dinner or a runway without needing to change.

According to Taylor, there are three components to look for when investing in a suit. First is fit. “Look for sharp lines that follow the body without restricting movement,” she says. Next, keep an eye out for high-quality materials with a rich drape. And whether it’s a functional cuff or a clean lapel, the small details make a big difference. “Get those right, and you have a garment that feels effortless every time you wear it.” To prove the value of adding a suit to your rotation, we asked Taylor to share seven of her favourite ways to style a matching set.

A bold orange three-piece suit shows, straight off the bat, that tailoring doesn’t have to mean ‘safe’. I paired this suit with a crisp white shirt and patterned tie to keep the look grounded, while amber sunglasses and a structured bag add a playful nod to retro glamour. This is my favourite outfit for events where I want to be remembered.

This chocolate brown suit gets an Americana twist with a bolo tie, turquoise detail and a gold-buckled belt. The open collar and rolled-up sleeves take the edge off the formality, making it perfect for creative meetings or casual evenings where I still want sharp lines.

Channelling the power and precision of 1980s vintage Armani and YSL, I’ve worn this charcoal double-breasted suit fully buttoned for maximum impact. A crisp white shirt and understated patterned tie sharpen the silhouette, while the strong shoulders and straight-leg trousers echo the era’s confident, architectural tailoring.

I love how olive green double-breasted tailoring can be elevated even further with a fuchsia silk tie. It’s a colour pairing that feels unexpected but works beautifully. A collared pin adds a vintage flourish, while the three-piece cut keeps the look structured and statement-worthy.

For this look, I wore a deep burgundy double-breasted suit with sleek burgundy pointed heels. It’s my version of modern city armour. The clean silhouette means I can stride through the day from fittings into lunch with confidence, while the rich colour brings warmth and depth to winter dressing.

For this look, I took the suit into relaxed, more fashion forward territory by losing the jacket entirely. This lets the tailored vest and trousers shine, and pairs well with a cropped shirt and statement accessories. It’s a balance of structure and ease, perfect for when you want polish without feeling overdone.

This deep charcoal monochrome moment has sharp lines, subtle sheen and a longline silhouette. Minimal accessories keep the focus on proportion and cut, proving that simplicity can be just as striking as bold colour. It’s my go-to ‘Friday’ suit as it translates perfectly from the workplace to post-work martinis.

Keep up with Taylor here.
