8 staff from Melbourne’s Sucker store show us their favourite winter outfit

WORDS BY FASHION JOURNAL

“I also don’t want to stop wearing my shorts in winter – that’s why I left my trackies on underneath.”

If your Instagram algorithm is anything like mine, you’ve seen at least one video or photo of fashionable employees styling new pieces in Sucker’s Melbourne store. One of the perks of working in retail is access to new pieces that land in-store. Somebody’s got to do the hard job of trying on new season Toile Studios and Madre Natura, right?

We went straight to the source and asked eight Sucker staff members to show us the outfit that’s currently on high rotation. Read on to see how these workers style Pseushi, Morph Studios, Be Right Back and more for the cool weather that’s just hit the city.

Layering and mixing [and] matching textures and prints is the way for me… it almost feels like a way of giving a new personality to a garment. I wear [pieces] from either local designers, such as this top from Toile Studios, or I also love to upcycle my own pieces for shoots that I end up using again in my outfits. It’s fun to create a new character for myself each day – I feel like there should be no rules to how you want to express yourself, so I like to experiment with my style a lot!

Chelsea Lubin, sales at Sucker

I love this Toile Studios jacket, it’s my new favourite piece in my wardrobe. It’s reversible, [so it’s] like two jackets in one. The V-shaped waist makes me feel sexy! I always go for comfort and warmth, [and] I also don’t wanna stop wearing my shorts in winter – that’s why I left my trackies on underneath. Both the trackies and shorts are thrifted. I really believe clothes should have as many lives as possible! Working at Sucker allows me to experiment with my style every day and I’m always trying new things, which is really fun. This fit in particular feels authentic to me – playful and comfy.

Aden McLeod, co-owner at Sucker

As it gets colder my ’fits become more and more simple, focusing on fit, quality and minimal tones. Since I got the Pseushi Mud Wash jeans about a year ago, I’ve been wearing them about four days a week as they just go with everything. I feel like having a piece or a few pieces in your wardrobe that you can just chuck on without too much thought is essential. Here I just paired the jeans with a Needles Rebuild shirt, Officine Creative Derbys and a bunch of my everyday gold jewellery.

Ben Tambyah, co-owner at Sucker

I definitely have felt my style evolve over the years at Sucker, taking influence and inspiration from people I respect, especially my business partner Aden. I try to stay true to whatever makes me feel comfortable in the morning. I find myself in these Madre Natura Palm Denim Pants almost too often, they’d have to be one of the best pieces I’ve copped from the shop. This winter I’m trying to wear more jackets and less hoodies. This is my dad’s leather jacket that I remember eyeing off at a young age and waiting until the time came when it fit me well.

Mikaela Stafford, visual artist

Comfort, baby! I hate having to constantly readjust clothes throughout the day or textiles that crinkle because I’m at my computer/sitting down for so many hours of the day. I prefer matching pieces from local designers like this Suku skirt or Morph Studio bracelet with some kind of vintage piece. I’ve worn these Paloma Wool boots (almost) to oblivion. Finding the balance between practical yet distinguishably playful is where I like my personal style to sit.

Eloise Hebiton, fashion designer

I enjoy having items in my wardrobe that are versatile and can be styled in different ways. Wearing this Be Right Back Sailor dress layered over jeans and beneath a jacket completely transforms its look and gives the piece a new purpose. Plus, it’s a bonus for keeping me warm as the temperatures drop.

Elements of the jacket, such as the eyelets and drawstrings, contribute to detail and create a flattering silhouette. The fur hood is a fun twist that adds boldness and a wintry feel to the ensemble.

Caitlyn Iskra, Horni Nails nail artist

In the realm of Horni Nails, creativity and comfort converge in a symphony of self-expression… the perfect blend of artistry and comfort is about encouraging individuality and self-expression. To express myself through my own personal style means to constantly evolve. My style is all about comfort and intuition. I dress in a way that feels true to myself, without sacrificing style. Working at Horni Nails has taught me that comfort and creativity go hand in hand.

Meg McConville, makeup artist

My job can be quite messy so for safety you’ll always find me in black, accented with a touch of colour or neutral tones. I also try not to buy too many pieces so I love layering as a way to get the most out of my clothes but still look like I’m wearing something new. This Toile Studios system midi skirt is a perfect layering piece that can be styled in so many ways, it’s also a nice way to break up the black.
