FJ editors share what’s on their summer wishlist

Freaky shoes, breezy skorts, Jane Birkin basket bags and essential summer reading.

With mere days left until we’re out of office for the holidays, the Fashion Journal team has been yapping about what we’ll be up to while work isn’t at the forefront of our minds. But even if we’re not writing about it, we’ll still be thinking about everything we’d love to wear.

While we do our best to resist impulse buying, for the most part, our long list of fashion and non-fashion wishes will remain merely a fun topic of conversation. Still, we’re only human.

Heatwaves are approaching and with that comes the need for some essentials. Namely; bikinis, baseball caps and books to read at the beach. To narrow it down, I asked everyone on the team to share the top three items on their wishlist this summer (aka the ones that’ll most likely be in our possession when January rolls around). Spoiler alert: almost all of the items are wearable.

Black ballet flats

I’m a firm believer that if you want to streamline your wardrobe, black ballet flats are a non-negotiable. I have an old pair on the brink of collapse that I’ve been delaying replacing but I think it’s time. The Rosalind leather ballet flats from Alohas are high on my wishlist, as are the Foundation Flat by Essen. For something a little lower priced, I’m also eyeing these flats by Mollini.

Skirt and singlet by Permanent Vacation

I love the whole latest collection from Melbourne label Permanent Vacation, but this set has caught my eye. I’ve been in the market for a mid-length skirt and this set would be so chic and easy for our end-of-year office party.

‘Dead or Alive’ by Zadie Smith

Please don’t shame me, I’ve yet to read a book by Zadie Smith. This summer, that changes. After wrecking my attention span with too much TikTok scrolling, I plan to take it back over the break – starting with Dead or Alive. It’s a set of essays, ranging from topics spanning Glastonbury to the change in government. I think I need to devote some time over the summer to thinking, so it’s firmly at the top of my wish ist.

Skort by My Mum Made It

I’ve been staunchly anti-mini skirt, anti-short shorts and anti-mini dress for the last several summers, opting instead for all things midi and modest. But something has awakened in me. My legs will be out on full display this year and I’d love to kick the season off with this darling gathered mini skirt from Brisbane label, My Mum Made It.

Mubi subscription

I’ve never been a big film person. A good rule of thumb when chatting with me is to assume I’ve never seen the movie you’re talking about. At most, I’ve quickly skimmed the Wikipedia summary so I can keep up with the conversation. But with sweltering summer nights ahead, I’ve decided to start spending evenings becoming more cultured at my home cinema (on my couch, fan blowing directly in my face). Mubi, home to pretty much every award-winning and underground indie film, seems like a good place to start.

Freaky shoes

Like American fashion writer Mandy Lee, I love shoes that are kinda freaky: alien-like Merrell Hydro Mocs, barefoot shoes that showcase your toes, feathery sandals. This summer, I’d love to score a pair of something truly shocking.

Upcycled cap by Yarnni

I’m trying to support more local makers lately and I’ve been eyeing one of these upcycled caps from Yaarni, the Naarm-based brand by artist Janni Cox. I’m into the distressed look and plan on wearing it with my super-buggy, black wraparound Szade sunnies all summer.

Shirt by Suku Home

This hand-dyed, shirred shirt from the Suku studio has become my full-blown obsession. I tried it on in-store and haven’t stopped thinking about it since. I don’t own anything with a Peter Pan colla, and now I’m wondering why everything I own isn’t finished with one.

Earrings by Pleiosien

I love a silver hoop but I think it’s time to shake up the standard silhouette. These Speíra earrings by Pleiosien, inspired by Greek geometry, are high on my wishlist. Picture this: all black outfit, slicked-back hair, winged liner and the Speíra earrings.

Katharina Lou Bikini

I’m in dire need of new swimwear and I’ve been eyeing up the cute plaid options from Katharina Lou ever since my housemate returned from the brand’s Melbourne pop-up with a whole new wardrobe. I can’t decide between the red tartan bikini or the reversible tankini, which would double as a hot party top. Maybe I need both?

Halter top by Emily Watson

I live in denim cut-offs and halter tops in summer, so I’m adding this frilly, gathered one by Melbourne designer Emily Watson to my Christmas wishlist. I first saw it on set of our balletcore print shoot, impeccably styled by Cecile Huynh, and have been thinking about it since.

Inès Bressand bag from Pan After

If I could afford to treat myself to anything right now, it’d be one of these stunning woven bags by Marseille-based designer Inès Bressand. The ‘froisse shopping’ style is my dream Jane Birkin basket – perfectly slouchy, sturdy leather handles and capacious enough to carry several books and a beach towel.

This summer, I have a vision. I plan to glow and dance, while also remaining hot and humble. This wishlist plays a huge part in the plan. After having the pleasure of borrowing a 7arthur necklace, I’m now hooked. They make me feel like a badass pope.

‘Witchy Woo’ Eau De Parfum by Vyrao

In contrast to my pope era, I’d like to lean more into my witchy side. I haven’t even smelt this perfume but the name has sold me. The design of the perfume bottle reminds me of the Mika Top from Monroe the Label. I’d argue the perfect summer combo.

An entire Mecca haul

While I’m at Mecca, I’ll need to restock on some faves, too. Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Superstar kit, my current fave mascara from Too Faced, the best bronzer for pasty girls like me, alongside the perfect beauty bag to store them in. And when escaping the heat at home, I plan to dance to Bishmilla and stare fondly at Franco Fontano’s polaroid or Nobuyoshi Araki’s polaroid, as she was one of the first doco artists I became obsessed with.
