IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TEMPLE OF THE SUN
WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE

Temple of the Sun is creating pieces that will be cherished for decades to come.

Finding the right jewellery for an engagement, birthday or anniversary (or any other type of big life event) can be challenging. You want a piece that will see you through the seasons of your life, and stand the test of time well enough to be passed on to family or friends.

Australian jewellery label Temple of the Sun understands the challenges that come with finding the perfect piece, which is why it’s introduced a signature Ceremonial collection and a bespoke service with jewellery designed and made-to-order in-house by a team of skilled artisans. Founded eight years ago in Byron Bay by life partners Yonna Derofe and Darren Gallant, Temple of the Sun is known for its hand-crafted pieces that draw on Yonna’s background as a ceramicist and silversmith, as well as her childhood in Istanbul.

First launched in October 2022, the label’s Ceremonial collection comprises 30 pieces, including unisex wedding bands and engagement rings. Like the rest of the label’s offering, the collection prioritises sustainability, with each piece handcrafted in its Byron Bay studio out of recycled and responsibly sourced solid gold. Any diamonds used are either lab-grown or certified conflict-free, Australian gemstones are used where possible and all orders are shipped in a carbon-neutral process.

Temple of the Sun’s co-founder and designer, Yonna, personally sources one-of-a-kind stones like Australian blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, and this personal touch extends to the label’s bespoke offering. Weaving her signature modern-ancient aesthetic throughout her designs, Yonna creates distinctive yet timeless pieces, to honour oneself or the connection shared with another. She incorporates a considered selection of ancient symbols, from serpentine motifs symbolising rebirth and transformation to knotted gold symbolising the promise of eternity.

Available in 14k and 18k, the Ceremonial collection and service aren’t only intended for those getting engaged or married. As Yonna says, “Although ceremonial [jewellery] is commonly thought of as an expression of love or commitment for another, ceremonial jewellery can also honour [and] celebrate any moment of significance in a life and [be] passed on as heirlooms”.

The designs featured in the collection are crafted with longevity in mind, and their blend of contemporary silhouettes with timeless, classic design features ensures they’ll be treasured for decades to come.
