Here’s what ya missed.

There was a lot to take in at VAMFF‘s Day Two runways last night. Kicking off with the MEL:BORN Menswear Runway, followed by two premium runways, the night provided a good look at the pretty and practical pieces we’ll be stocking our wardrobes with this year.

Here are a few highlights.

Melbourne menswear

The MEL:BORN Menswear Runway was the perfect op to check out three local menswear designers at their peak. With a focus on tailoring and sharp silhouettes, Christian Kimber, Chris Ran Lin and MANDATORY all provided good examples of why we should remember to support our local designers.

Leather and vinyl reign supreme

Both Runway One and Two made it apparent that leather clothing will forever be timeless. Scanlan Theodore offered button down leather tunics, while Bassike and Bianca Spender gave their spin on leather pants for 2019 (and they’re anything but tight). There was also an abundance of leather-looking vinyl designs, for those who don’t like to opt for the real thing. Highlights included Camilla and Marc’s Roberta skirt in maroon and Martin Grant’s olive windbreaker.

Karla Špetić’s Bubble Trench

Everyone knows the most exciting looks at VAMFF are usually the ones that are a little less wearable. That’s perhaps why we instantly fell in love with Karla Špetić’s bubble wrap coat. The visual is exactly as you’d imagine, with the trench looking as if it was literally cut from a roll of Australia Post’s finest packaging (it’s actually made from eco-friendly agar). Plus, it theoretically serves a double purpose of keeping you entertained when you’re bored.

KITX’s latest sustainable goodness

I’m a big fan of what Kit Willow’s putting down, so I was very pleased to see her latest collection doesn’t disappoint. It’s true to what we’ve come to expect from the brand, with asymmetrical skirts, raw hemming and off-the-shoulder styles in abundance. Extra points for the long frayed denim jacket that we can see ourselves living in throughout winter.

Pattern-heavy dressing

The time for a minimalist wardrobe is over, and if Runway One and Two proved anything, it was that bold and bright prints are sticking around. We fell head over heels checking out Kate Sylvester’s fashionable tribute to artist Frances Hodgkins. Continuing the trend, Karla Špetić, Lee Mathews, Scanlan Theodore, Camilla and Marc, By Johnny and, of course, Camilla are all offering up some sort of bold pattern this season.
