Colourful and classic.

If you were to ask us what fashion trends dominated this year, we’d have to give you a long list. Sure, the nostalgic Y2K party-girl aesthetic has endured, with capri pants, kitten heel sling-backs and more than a fair share of Bratgreen accessories. But we also can’t skip sportswear, the official uniform of 2024.

It’s been a big year for tennis-inspired athleisure, in no small part thanks to the Paris Olympics, the annual Australian Open and Zendaya’s immaculate method-dressing for Challengers (we’ll never stop thinking about that pair of tennis ball heels, ever).

However, in our Melbourne home base, it sometimes feels like the only sporty sets we can snatch up are in all-black, grey or muted tones. The age of colourful exercise outfits has been snuffed out by the onslaught of stretchy beige yoga pants and matching monogrammed hoodies. But we have a sneaky suspicion the campy charm of mid-century sportswear is back.

Iconic Aussie sportswear brand, Volley, just debuted a capsule apparel collection set to zhuzh up your summer outfits: Court Classics. The range of retro-inspired casuals includes shorts, track pants, skorts, polos, T-shirts, jackets and sneakers.

Made in collaboration with creative consultant, Ken Sakata, Court Classics is Volley’s first-ever apparel collection, which aims to hero the brand’s authentically Australian, 85-year heritage.

After exploring how geography shapes design and international trends in sportswear, Ken and the Volley team wanted to apply these insights when creating Court Classics. The process resulted in swish designs draped in bright orange hues and electric blue highlights, with a timeless charm that looks straight out of a retro catalogue.

As a doctor-turned-menswear designer, there’s probably no one better to bring retro-inspired sportswear back into the cultural zeitgeist than Ken, whose first foray into fashion was coming up with apparel for a sports team he made upThe former surgeon, known for his sharp critical eye and attention to detail, came up with conceptual sketches and garment silhouettes to help celebrate the nostalgic charm of retro Australiana, bright blue pool shorts and all.
