’Til death shoe us part.

When it comes to weddings, it’s all about the details. It’s the day to showcase your forever love to your nearest and dearest, and it’s of vital importance you look amazing while doing so. Yes, the bigger factors are important (venue, guest list, the person you’re marrying, etc.), but the thoughtful touches are what really make the day.

For some, this means picking a pair of shoes before choosing a big-day outfit. Outside of the quintessential dress or suit, a shoe is where you can really have some fun. From Prada platforms to bejewelled Jimmy Choos, 8 Australian creatives share their wedding shoes below.

I initially was after a less traditional style – as I was really inspired by vintage and current runway pieces – but fate led me to these! I was in love with the Mach Mach heels and the Versace platform pumps to wear at first. I wanted a youthful and edgy shoe to wear on the big day that I could also wear again – being a young bride, I wanted to have fun with my styling choices.

Upon trying on a bunch of shoes a week before at Sydney Westfield (crazy I know, the sales assistants thought I was insane), I decided to go with something more delicate and timeless. The Jimmy Choo pumps were at the top of the shelf, released the day before… I was the second person to try them on. My insane last-minute shoe shopping paid off. They were comfortable on the big day, added a beautiful crystal detail and matched perfectly to my dress. I can’t wait to style them again!

I wore a pair of cream stilettos for the ceremony I purchased off Net-A-Porter. As it was a country wedding, I very quickly opted for a block heel afterwards. I wore a pair of Jo Mercer slingback heels for the remainder of the night. They were perfect as I could dance in them, be comfortable and not worry if they were being ruined. It was nice to be in a beautiful pair for the ceremony but then be relaxed after. And of course, at the end of the night, I slid into a comfortable pair of Monte Slippers.

When it came to my wedding, there was nothing I bought or wore that I didn’t want in my life outside of my wedding day. As a shoe-obsessed person who has constantly had over 100 pairs of shoes for many years now, when it came down to picking my wedding shoe, there was no doubt in my mind.

My suit was classic, black and white, masculine yet feminine and a little out of the box, so I wanted my shoes to reflect that. I wore the Prada Monoliths that I had to buy almost 18 months before my wedding day, to avoid the constant sell out. Absolutely no regrets, this shoe is a showstopper!

I wore the Aquazzura Sundance Platform – a bright gold, Studio 54-inspired, 5.5-inch beast of a shoe! I chose them for three reasons: one, my wedding skirt was a tulle number with a short front, so the shoes were absolutely KEY. Two, I had a double-decker bus and fried chicken mains, so the brief was undoubtedly ‘party shoe’. Three, as soon as I saw them, it was love at first sight.

Being on show, my shoes were almost (ALMOST) as important as my outfit. The most important factors were that they were fun, felt like me, and fit right into my wedding theme. Clearly, the least important factor was comfort. (My ankles are yet to recover, five years later.)

I found (and bought) my wedding shoes well before my wedding dress, then prayed the dress would match. Fortunately, the pair I opted for were quite versatile. By Polish designer Magda Butrym, they’re an ivory-coloured silk mule with a nice, wedding-appropriate low heel (you can actually find a similar pair on The Outnet right now). They have detachable bows that can be worn at the front or back, plus optional anklets for a nice jazzy touch.

I’ve already worn them quite a few times since, including to Fashion Journal’s first Supper Club with Croser. I can drop them at the dry cleaner for a refresh when it’s needed, which is handy. Our wedding day started at 12pm, which is early on the spectrum of wedding scheduling, so I also bought a fresh pair of Converse to wear dancing in the evening. My feet just don’t have the stamina for a day in heels.

We were married in December 2017 in Kangaroo Valley NSW. For the ceremony, I wore pink velvet Oscar Tiye Antoinet heels (my wedding dress was Miu Miu) and for the reception, I changed into an Ellery silk slip dress worn with Dolce and Gabbana rainbow sequin heels.

I wore a Cult Gaia Toa Sandal in natural linen, with a low spherical heel… mainly because I loved them and was looking for an excuse to buy them. My dress was really simple and I wanted a shoe that would match but also mean I could wear them all day. My wedding was a long day of lunch and dancing, and I didn’t want to have a do a costume change halfway through. I’m a big sucker for a sculptural heel so that helped too.

I loved my dress, so I really wanted them to work with that. I debated about the height of the heel for a while too but decided to go with something I would wear all day. I also wanted to be able to wear my shoes again after the wedding, so I thought about what would work with my existing wardrobe.

Nothing was traditional about our wedding – none of our mates knew we were getting hitched. We got married in front of our immediate family in the parkland at the bottom of our street and disguised our wedding reception as a joint 30th at Lulie Tavern.

Mark, my husband, got changed out of his suit before guests arrived and I stayed in my sparkly dress and boots but no one thought it was unusual, as I’m often wearing a ridiculous amount of sparkles on a night out with mates.

The dress came first after spotting it online at Rachel Comey, then the shoes. I knew I wanted something sparkly (of course) and a little bit rockstar and stumbled across these magnificent Steve Madden boots at Myer. Once we announced we got hitched, we danced all night. I got changed into a second, shorter and sparkly Torrance dress matched with pink and sparkly Converse.
