A week in work outfits with New York City-based musician, True Blue
WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE
“I like to look like a ragamuffin at the airport with a pinch of stylish flair.”
Working in a creative role, it can be difficult to know how to dress for the day. Instead of having a set uniform of crisp white shirts and tailored black pants (as much as I love both), an ever-changing schedule means every morning requires a set of questions. Am I running around, or just sitting at my desk? Do I need to dress specifically for a project? And most importantly, will I be in the background of someone’s TikTok?

This week, New York-based musician True Blue takes us through a week in her busy life. From secondhand shopping and wines with creative collaborators to flying to Japan to support Caroline Polachek on her world tour, she favours high-end labels like Margiela, Comme des Garcons and Celine with a smattering of secondhand accessories. Read on to hear what pieces she gravitated to this week.
Monday
Today’s energy was cozy utility balanced with chic materials. Most of the day I wore my Celine pirate pimp shoes with my new Margiela pants that are half silk, half denim. To bring in the cozy I wore my threadbare vintage tee and oversized Costume National suede moto jacket.
I ran errands and then made cheeseburgers for dinner. After dinner, I discussed a custom stage look commission with my friend Olive of Lucky Jewel over a glass of Lambrusco at a new natural wine bar by my apartment in Chinatown.
Tuesday
Today I wore my structural Antonio Marras wool coat and my Margiela pants again tucked into black fold-over boots. My bestie said it looked like I was going to harvest oysters. Slay! I went uptown to the Japanese consulate on Park Ave to get my entertainer visa to perform in Tokyo.
Later I went to dinner at Lovely Day with my friend Claire of Coco & Clair to catch up and gossip. I traded my boots in for my fave kitten heels for my day-to-night moment!
Wednesday
The weather was amazingly warm today so I wanted to wear my new Balenciaga boots with a mini skirt, but I was also PMSing so I wanted to balance it out with some cozy incognito pieces. I wore my bomber jacket and this hat I got at a hippie market in Montreaux, Switzerland.
I left my house to get a coffee and immediately ran into my ex. Then I got a slice of pizza and went to Iconic Magazines in Soho with my bestie Nancy to see her print spread in King Kong. I turned in early to rest and work on my live set!
Thursday
Today I went to my studio to rehearse. I wanted to be comfortable but still activated and silhouetted up, so I wore my snatched New York hoodie made by Timothy Gibbons and silk SC103 culottes. I walked to my studio through Chinatown so I wore my comfortable fold-over suede boots. Later in the evening, I had my first voice lesson ever with my friend Melody!
Friday
I started the day doing some shopping with my girls at downtown’s best vintage store, Lara Koleji. I wore my sluggy leather jacket layered with my Margiela jacket, a vintage tee and my sunbleached Nike sweatpants that I got last time I was in Japan.
From there, I headed to my studio to rehearse. Later in the evening, I met up with my friend Rachel who does art direction and design for True Blue. We got martinis and fries at the Odeon and caught up about business and pleasure.
Saturday
Today I went on airplane mode and flew to Japan for the start of the Caroline Polachek x True Blue tour. I wore my favourite mint sweatshirt, vintage Ozzy Osbourne tee, antique linen bloomers, my suede fold-over boots and silver SC103 silver purse.
I like to look like a ragamuffin at the airport with a pinch of stylish flair. I need to make sure whatever I’m wearing is able to touch the airport floor in case of instances like this where my flight is delayed and I haven’t slept enough. Shlubby chic never fails!
Sunday
Today was my first day in Tokyo! Caroline and I went shopping and then hit the onsen. Later, we got dinner with our photographer friends David Brandon Geeting and Harley Weir. For dinner, I wore my custom medals top by my fave London-based designer Katya Zelentsova.
It matched perfectly with my vintage Comme Des Garçons purse. I wore my Margiela jacket from 2006 and my Margiela pants with kitten heels to feel some nighttime sparkle. My latest single ‘Airplane Mode’ just dropped today too. Going ‘Airplane Mode’ is all about disappearing and taking some space and anonymity when you know you need to hone in on your dreams.
