The fashion essentials on the FJ team’s wishlist this season

Scarves, skirts and track pants.

In my 27 years, I’ve realised the secret to building a dream wardrobe rarely lies in impulse buys. Instead, I’ve been focused on the slow and steady method. This typically involves sitting on an item for a couple of months, taking the time to research the brand and materials, and saving up. If an item makes it through the vetting process, I’ll invest.

While it’s helped curb my consumption, it can be particularly challenging when the seasons shift. As the temperatures plummet, I’ve found myself eyeing a handful of winter essentials, like a good scarf or a woollen coat.

Notes app in hand, I’ve been slowly curating my cold-weather edit, looking to both local labels and secondhand stores. Below, the FJ team shares the investment pieces topping their lists.

As Melbourne settles into its colder months, I’ve had my eye on this track set from Olivia Rowan. I’ve been drawn to cleaner, straighter silhouettes lately, and this one ticks all the boxes. I love the idea of a hoodie and track pants that feel equally suited to a slow weekend or drinks with friends.

Bags have never felt seasonal to me, but with colder, rainier days fast approaching, I’ve noticed myself carrying a lot more than usual — gloves, an umbrella and hand warmers, to name a few. Naturally, I’ve found myself on the hunt for a secondhand oversized leather bag. Arrive Archive is always one of the first places I browse. Its selection spans a diverse range of colours and styles, so I’m patiently waiting for the right one to appear.

Every trip to the op shop recently has been with one item in mind. I’m on the lookout for a wool skirt that I can layer over pants or wear with knee-high boots this winter. Plaid, plain, pleated or not, I’m waiting to find the perfect fit.

Winter footwear is also on my radar right now. I have cold feet all the time, and wearing ballet flats every day is becoming a bit of a stretch. I’ve been eyeing this pair of loafers from Radical Yes or some boots from Steve Madden. This will likely be a one or the other purchase, so I’m taking my time deciding. While we’re on the topic of cold feet, I would love to get my hands on the wine-coloured sheepskin slippers from Hommey, too.

A black, woollen coat has been at the top of my winter wishlist for years now, but I’ve always been really particular about the style and fabrication. The vintage Gods blessed me last weekend, though, because I finally found my dream coat at PDA Shop. I would love a knee-length skirt to match (if it’s not too much to ask), so I’ll be popping back in when they restock.

I’m also dreaming of an enormous scarf to drape myself in, like this one from Friends with Frank. And when it comes to a good basic (essential for winter layering), no one does it like St. Agni. I’ve got my eye on this long sleeve, and love the idea of styling it with a chunky belt.

As winter kicks off, I’m realising my wardrobe is not built for this weather. So I’ve been on the hunt for jackets and knits I can layer that will look cute and keep me warm. The Porter James Blouson jacket has been on my wishlist for months, along with the dart-knee pleated trousers. I love that all Porter James styles are unisex because I’ve been looking to add more masculine silhouettes to my wardrobe.

I’m also loving a colourful winter outfit, especially layered colourful knits. But the current knit market is a sea of grey and black. When it comes to colour, vintage does it better. I see a shop at Swop and Goodbyes in my future.

On the top of my wishlist this winter is knitwear (groundbreaking). Specifically, the grey V-neck Sarah sweater from Frisson Knits that I’ve had my eye on for weeks. I already own one striped Frisson jumper and I wear it so much, my friends are sick of seeing me in it. I also desperately need a few more merino tops as I’m wearing my Paris Georgia one into the ground lately. This merino Fatale long sleeve from Melbourne label Kahe looks perfect. I love a boat neck line.
