A week in work outfits with Melbourne designer and Monphell Founder, Toby Wright

WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE

“I love being comfortable and sometimes you just need a good basic tee and some slacks.”

Working in a creative role, it can be difficult to know how to dress for the day. Instead of having a set uniform of crisp white shirts and tailored black pants (as much as I love both), an ever-changing schedule means every morning requires a set of questions. Am I running around, or just sitting at my desk? Do I need to dress specifically for a project? And most importantly, will I be in the background of someone’s TikTok?

This week, Toby Wright, the Founder of Melbourne label Monphell, shows us his week in work outfits. Across his week, he spends a lot of time visiting the makers that help him bring his collections to life, filming content, running errands and hiring out his studio space to other brands and creatives, so his outfits need to be both functional and stylish. Here’s what he wore.

Monday

I like to take Mondays a bit slower than the rest of the week so I’ll do my morning routine a bit later than usual. I caught up on emails and posted some orders out. I usually work from home and run some errands. I have never been a trackies kinda guy but I know I will live in these this winter. These trackies are made from a cotton/wool blend so they are crazy soft. Everything in this photo is Monphell.

Tuesday

My partner Paris and I got into my studio around 10am. Today we had to make some content for marketing, which takes up most of the day. The content that seems to get the most traction is when we just film ourselves off of our iPhones. I’m not a fan of being on camera (a very bad case of resting bitch face so I have been told) but Paris seems to be a natural so it works. I love being comfortable and sometimes you just need a good basic tee and some slacks. Everything in this photo is Monphell.

Wednesday

Today I am all over the place. Most of my week consists of driving. 99 per cent of my clothing is made locally and my maker, Tan, is located in Taylors Lakes which I would drive to most days. After having a chat with Tan for an hour or so I head back to the studio and start editing the content from the day before.

If I can avoid driving, I usually get around town on my bike. I really love cycling apparel, so much so I decided to create my own. These jerseys are a full-body mesh that moulds to your body for the perfect fit. They look great with the oversized three-quarter shorts. Everything in this photo is Monphell.

Thursday

I like to mix up my morning routine so Paris and I had a sauna and swim before work. As well as owning a brand, I hire out my studio (it also doubles as a Monphell showroom) for photoshoots/exhibitions/events. Today a brand was shooting at the studio so I helped them to set up and then it was back out to see Tan in Taylors Lakes.

I have classic suit shoes on today, baggy cotton pants a plain tee and a cropped jacket. I am also wearing some Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses (once you buy a pair you will never buy another brand of sunglasses) and a $10 hand-knitted beanie I scored back home in Tassie.

Friday

Today is coffee, gym, walk the dogs and then off to Yarraville to see my pattern makers Glenn and Scott and pick up some patterns for my up-and-coming winter collection. After a few more coffees and grabbing some lunch with the darl I ran some more errands and worked from home for the rest of the day. I am wearing another cycling jersey (dropping this winter!!) and these cobalt blue pants I made a few years ago which are still on high rotation. The sneakers are Adidas and Song for the Mute collab.
