What to know about this year’s Academy Awards.
Is it just us, or do the Academy Awards feel particularly exciting this year? Perhaps part of the reason is Sinners’ record-breaking lineup of nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director – the most a single film has received in Oscar history.
This year’s award circuit has also introduced us to the wonder of Jessie Buckley and Chase Infiniti, and off the screen, we all collectively gasped when Law Roach spilled the beans on Zendaya’s wedding. And of course, who could forget Timothee Chalamet’s press tour antics for his portrayal of the ping-pong star in Marty Supreme. Will it be enough to bag Best Actor? We think Timmy’s already prepared the speech.

Fresh off his “Wuthering Heights” press circuit, Jacob Elordi is up for nomination for his role as The Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. He’s already received several nominations for the portrayal and took home the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor.
But Elordi has stiff competition with a host of industry heavyweights, including Benicio Del Toro (One Battle after Another), Delroy Lindo (Sinners), Sean Penn (One Battle after Another) and Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value).
Fiona Crombie, Production Design
Australian costume and production designer Fiona Crombie is also up for nomination for her work on Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet. The period film, based on a fictional retelling of William Shakespeare’s family, has received eight nominations in total.
This also marks Crombie’s second nomination in the same category, with her previous work being on Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite in 2018.
Nick Cave: Music (original song)
Nick Cave has been recognised for best original song in Train Dreams, co-written with director Bryce Dessner. Created for the film of the same name, it also stars Australian actor Joel Edgerton.
This is Cave’s first Oscar nomination, and he’ll be competing with music from Sinners, Viva Verdi!, KPop Demon Hunters and Diane Warren.
Guido Wolter: Visual Effects
With 17 years of experience under his belt, you’ve likely seen Guido Wolter’s work before, in films like Mickey 17, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Star Wars: Episode VIII.
