Book review: 200 Years Of Australian Fashion

Almost too nice.

This is the kind of book that is so nice, you don’t really want to read it in case you bend the pages.

So maybe buy two copies because what lies inside is informative, authoritative and the first of its kind. In fact, I think I exclaimed “this book is so good!” at least three times while reading it.

Published to support the current NGV exhibition of the same name, 200 Years of Australian Fashion tracks the development of Australian fashion over four parts: Status, Glamour, Independence and Contemporary.

It starts at colonial times – when Europe was the authority for sartorial guidance – and through imagery, specialist essays and a study of over 90 designers, it shows how Australia found its distinct voice in fashion.
