Book review: Party Girls Die in Pearls

An overtly cliché but enjoyable read.

Admittedly, the title of this one made me cringe. But please don’t let that deter you.

Plum Sykes already has two New York Times bestsellers under her belt and is a contributing editor at American Vogue.

Party Girls Die in Pearls falls somewhere between what you’d expect from the title and what you’d expect from Sykes’ bio. It’s set in the decadent context of 1980s Oxford University, following our humble and kindly protagonist as she is welcomed into the ‘Champagne Set’.

On her second day, Ursula Flowerbutton (yes, really) discovers the dead body of the college’s ‘it’ girl. She proceeds to investigate and (shock, horror), unravels a web of deceit.

It’s overtly cliché but still an enjoyable read. File under guilty pleasure.
