City Guide: Creative consultant Chloe Naughton’s favourite spots in Melbourne

WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE

“I am always up for going to the movies and I can’t go to the cinema without going to Readings to buy a book.”

Here at Fashion Journal, we want to unearth the hidden spots in Australian cities that only the locals know about. There’s no gatekeeping here – this is a breakdown of the best bits of our cities. We want the underrated date spots, favourite restaurants, treasure trove op shops and the bars people will always want to go back to.

This week, we’re hearing about A-n Studio’s Studio Manager and creative consultant Chloe Naughton’s favourite places in Melbourne. A lifelong Melburnian, she loves the city’s “Really beautiful mix of city, gardens, galleries, restaurants, wine bars and bookstores.” Below, Chloe shares some of her favourite places to visit in her city.

Napier Quarter, Brico, Apollo Bar, Above Board, Sky Bar, The European and Amarillo are my go-to’s. Or a bottle of wine or (more likely) a cup of tea on my balcony in Fitzroy as the sun sets is also a favourite.

My regular spots are Poodle, Hector’s Deli Fitzroy, Builders Arms Hotel, Marion, Florian, Julie and Cam’s at the Abbotsford Convent, Cibi and Everyday Coffee. I opt for Gimlet when I am feeling fancy and Napier Quarter (again) because it’s my favourite (always).

We also go to Marquis of Lorne in Collingwood all the time because we can bring our dog Appa. Anywhere we can go where Appa is allowed will always become a regular for us. Appa loves steak night – she is such a brat.

Cinema Nova because I am always up for going to the movies and I can’t go to the cinema without going to Readings to buy a book. I like low-key date nights with no fuss. I mostly just want to sit at a quiet dimly lit table with my husband and talk about what’s happening in our lives which Carlton Wine Room is perfect for, or DOC Espresso.

The perfect day

Waking up early and walking to Burnside Coffee for my morning coffee with Appa. I might then get dressed and be at the NGV for 10am opening time to try and beat the crowds, even better if it’s a Wednesday morning. I would walk over to Pellegrini’s and have lunch in the bar with a book. My second coffee would be at Dukes and I’d go into Marais and Harrold’s for some window shopping.

R&R

My favourite place for R&R has closed down – a beautiful, traditional Japanese bathhouse deep in Collingwood’s backstreets, so I am still recovering from the loss. But I am no stranger to Sense of Self and you can often find me shoes off, lying flat like a pancake on the grass at Carlton Gardens.
