House-made sourdough and whipped butter.

Here at Fashion Journal, we want to unearth the hidden spots in Australian cities that only the locals know about. There’s no gatekeeping here – this is a breakdown of the best bits of our cities. We want the underrated date spots, favourite restaurants, treasure trove op shops and bars people will always want to go back to. We also want to sniff out the best spots people find overseas.

This week, we’re exploring Berlin with Adelaide-based publicist, Daisy Buckland. A lover of art, design and natural wine, Daisy’s Euro trip is the stuff of Pinterest board dreams. From St Tropez to Milan, it’s hard to pick favourites – but according to Daisy, Berlin ranks pretty highly.

“Berlin is known as Germany’s arty, edgy counterpart – the city is a cultural mosaic of art, design, fashion, music, food, and wine,” Daisy tells us. Though it can be intimidating at times (because there’s always something happening in Berlin), Daisy insists that beneath the exterior, lies a range of people and businesses pushing the boundaries and crafting unique experiences.

Sofi is a suburban bakery specialising in low-intervention baking and craft traditions with a tiny but tasty menu of bread and pastries. I tried their infamous ham and cheese sourdough bun lathered with salty butter, washed down with a glass of Nature’s Calling wine. Also, the merch available onsite is super cute!

Found in the locality of Prenzlauer Berg, Frieda is an ultra-cool neighbourhood hangout with an unpretentious menu and an all-natural wine list to match. The team take sustainability seriously, sourcing ingredients locally from biodynamic farmers and artisans – you can find a full list of producers on their website. Dishes are seasonal but the house-made sourdough and whipped butter are to die for.

Walk in off the street and ask for a glass of whatever’s on pour that day, probably a natural light red or orange skin-contact wine. If you’re keen to settle in for the night, there’s a handful of snacks and interesting larger plates worth trying. The bar hosts a line-up of food collaborations and ‘day parties’ throughout the year. Stay in the know via their Instagram.

Berlin is well known for its old ‘Photoautomats’, tucked away in gritty, unassuming city corners. Keep a few Euros on hand and immortalise date night memories.

Soho House Berlin

I consider luxury to be the ultimate indulgence and suggest treating yourself to a night at Soho House Berlin. Discover the rooftop pool and bar plus Cowshed day spa, an onsite gym and the iconic Cecconi’s restaurant. The house also has an enviable art collection, including Damien Hirst’s famed ‘shark in the lobby’, created on a whim while the building was still under wraps.

The perfect day

The perfect day starts with a strong oat latte from French Boulangerie La Maison. The best way to see any city is from the pavement so traverse cultural districts Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg. There are plenty of bars in both localities to keep you hydrated on your travels.

On holidays I opt for an afternoon nap before venturing out again in the evening. Klunkerkranichn is an iconic rooftop beer garden with sweeping views to catch the sunset over the city.

Keep up with Daisy here.
