Blessed day, Margaret Atwood is touring Australia

Words by Maki Morita

The Handmaid’s Tale is continued, 34 years later.

Calling all Margaret Atwood fans: the celebrated author will be gracing our shores early next year to talk about dystopian worlds, handmaids and her writing career.

You can thank Fane for this opportunity, who will be presenting In Conversation with Margaret Atwood live on stage across all major Australian cities in collaboration with Andrew Kay, Phil Bathols and BBC Studios Australia.

The tour, starting in mid-February, collides with the global publication of The Testaments, Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, published over 30 years later.

Following handmaid Offred and her struggles in a totalitarian, patriarchal state, The Handmaid’s Tale is a feminist must-read that fast became a symbol for women’s rights. The Testaments picks up the story 15 years later, and is based on the testaments of three female narrators from the fictional world of Gilead.

Atwood is no stranger to her fans in Australia, stating “I am so happy to be returning to Australia, where I have spent much time in the past, and where readers have always been so warm and welcoming”. We’re sure Australian readers are happy that Atwood is returning too.

Ticket pre-sales will commence at noon on Monday 25 November, with general sales released on Friday 29 November. You can find more information regarding tickets here.
