Introducing the FJ Book Club, a fortnightly meeting of friends talking reads

Come read with us.

Hello dearest friends and welcome to the inaugural Fashion Journal Book Club! We’ve created this club as a way for us all to switch off from the current news cycle and connect with other, real human beings about something we all love, books.

Every fortnight, we’ll announce a new title as the book we’ll all be reading, as selected by your FJ editors.

If the title tickles your fancy, all you’ll need to do is register your interest to join that week’s book club. We’ll give you a week to order the book, another two weeks to read it, and finally schedule a Zoom get-together where we can all discuss the highs, lows and boring bits of the stories we’ve just read.

Kicking off book club is How to Get Over a Boy, by Chidera Eggerue, our pick for an inspiring self-help read while we all dive deeper into lockdown.

Chidera is the bestselling author of What a Time to be Alone and activist behind the social media movement #SAGGYBOOBSMATTER. In How to Get Over a Boy, she helps us reframe the stale goal of finding a partner, instead equipping us with real solutions for every part of our dating lives (including isolation), helping us recognise that romantic suitors only hold as much power in our lives as we grant them.

We particularly love Chidera’s take, as it pushes past tired dating advice that frames a partner as ‘the prize’ and fixates on ‘how to make them find you hot!’, ‘how to make them jealous!’, ‘how to get them to propose!’.

It’s particularly relevant for those who are pining over a particular someone or are finding loneliness in isolation given our reduced ability to date. And while it is written from a heteronormative viewpoint, much of the content is universally applicable.
