Stay awake.

Australia’s own hip hop queen, Tkay Maidza, has dropped a new single about insomnia.

With the help of Baltimore-based rapper JPEGMAFIA, ‘Awake’ relies on a darkly chaotic beat and siren-like synth drones.

“The song is about insomnia,” Tkay explains. “I came up with the hook one night when I couldn’t sleep and it was in the middle of the night of a writing trip where I was up late ’til at least 3am every night for a whole month. We flipped the track and made it about what I do whilst I’m not sleeping.”

What she does, according to the accompanying video, is roam by torchlight through streets, factories and construction sites.

The clip has the same hypnotising, frenetic energy as the track itself, with enough flashing lights and hard dance moves to earn it a seizure warning.
