AS TOLD TO FASHION JOURNAL
“The weather gods hooked me up.”
Choosing an outfit can be hard, even on the most ordinary of days. I’ve spent far too many mornings combing through my wardrobe, angrily tossing rejected items onto my bed because there’s nothing to wear – and that’s just for an outfit very few people will actually notice. Naturally, then, my heart goes out to people in the spotlight, like musicians, who have hundreds, if not thousands, of people’s eyes on them at a time.

It’s a tall order, too. Unlike my work clothes, their outfits need to be comfortable and versatile, all the while making them feel confident enough to sing their hearts out in front of crowds. For Australian artists George Alice and Mariae Cassandra, who both recently took the stage at Brisbane’s Bigsound festival, getting dressed each day was all about striking this balance.
Whether it was navigating humid weather, back-to-back events or spontaneous photo shoots, George and Mariae found their groove by reaching for both new and pre-loved pieces from their wardrobes. From tartan sets to a trusty pair of boots, this is how they spent their time at Bigsound, and the outfits that carried them through.

I kicked off Wednesday with the Spotify breakfast, meeting a bunch of other artists and industry folk, which was lovely. One of the best things about Bigsound has been being surrounded by so many music lovers and swapping stories about art, life and making tunes. I’ve been releasing music for years but recently took a little break, so sharing my new singles ‘SOS’ and ‘Valium and Sushi’ here and getting such kind feedback has felt really special.
Of course, I had to fit in some content shooting. Brisbane blessed us with warm but breezy weather, the perfect excuse to rotate through some favourite fits: a tartan set with my Nowa bodysuit and shiny new Pumas (closing-down sale find, thank you very much), then later swapping into an X-girl camo skirt and Dangerfield corset blouse. The weather gods hooked me up.
The rest of the day was a mix of errands, events and soaking in the buzz before my showcase at The Prince Consort. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how many people would show up, but in a wild twist, the place was packed. Playing a set of old favourites and new songs to such a full, open-air crowd was unreal and the reaction blew me away. After our show, I dove into the valley chaos, catching so many incredible sets (shoutout to Wishlist!).
Another thing I adore about Bigsound is the atmosphere. It feels like every friend you’ve ever made, every person who’s touched your career, is in one space. The energy is just unmatched. Now I’m heading back to Adelaide, super tired but buzzing. With my Sydney and Melbourne headline shows coming up next month, I was already excited but after this week, I can’t wait!

Day one started with heaps of networking and interviews with Charlie in the Rain, Unravelled Edit and Amplify. The weather was a bit chilly, which I actually loved because I got to wear this thrifted shirt from the bins back in Perth and a skirt I bought in Japan. I really love outfits that are simple but still have something special about them. And then, the best part, Dr. Martens gave me these beautiful Buzz shoes. They were comfy, colourful and literally felt like a full-circle moment because I started my TikTok journey by unboxing my first pair of Docs.
Later, I found myself on a rooftop shooting some content for Triple J (and some for myself too, of course) before playing my very first showcase. I still can’t believe how many people showed up, it felt completely unreal.
Day two was such a fun one. My outfit had this bright pop of blue, I wore a Cotton On halter top (that actually belongs to my mum… thanks Mum!) with a skirt I thrifted in Brisbane, plus my trusty boots that I probably overwear but they’ve become such a staple now. I had a meeting in the morning, then spent a bunch of time at the Content House chatting with so many amazing women in the industry. That night I got to see Teenage Joans, aleksiah, Frankie Venter and That Gurl Bella. Afterwards, I played on the Brightside Outdoor Stage to close out Triple J’s stage run. The crowd was just the sweetest.
Day three was all about staying comfy because it was so humid. I wore this striped skirt with a thrifted top that someone had gifted me. During the day, I stopped by a shop called Practice Studio and saw some really beautiful handmade pieces. It definitely made me want to experiment more with my own fashion. I wrapped up Bigsound by playing at the Oztix party, then ended the night watching the WAM Showcase at Blutes.
I’m still processing it all but Bigsound left me feeling inspired and excited for what’s next. I honestly can’t wait to do it all again soon!
