If nothing else, buy the sunscreen.

With the plethora of products on the beauty market, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by choice anxiety when it comes to creating a skincare routine. Self-care has taken a front seat and while it’s wonderful we’re treating our skin with the love it deserves, it’s hard to know where to start. Retinol whoWhat’s a gua sha?

The overabundance of product choices for skincare rookies is no match for those in the beauty biz. Between PR packages, brand launches and generally keeping in the know, skinfluencers face the task of wading through tubes, vials and bottles to find the glowing gems. Not only have they probably reached the bottom of a Chapstick (where do mine go?), but they’ve polished off the products that give them the effortless no-makeup glow we all want.

We like nosy people. Don’t be shy, head to our Beauty section for more.

If they’re using it down to the dregs, you know it’s good. On behalf of my fellow rookies, I asked three skinfluencers to show me their latest empties to make the product search less anxiety-inducing.

I’ve just powered through my La Roche Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF 50. I find it’s one of the best sunscreens for olive skin tones – it absorbs nicely into the skin, is super comfortable to wear and doesn’t leave behind a white veil. It also makes your skin look slightly dewy so I love to layer it under makeup.

A lot of people with brown skin tones don’t think they need to wear sunscreen – I used to be one of those people. But I can tell you right now, you can still get sun damage, or be at high risk of getting skin cancers if you don’t protect your skin from the sun, no matter what skin tone you are! The MVP of anyone’s skincare regimen (especially here in Australia) should be sunscreen – even in winter when it’s not sunny!

I’ve also emptied my Aspect Probiotic Mask. It’s fortified with amazing skin barrier-repairing ingredients, but I’m more into the radiant complexion it gives you. Sometimes, if my skin needs a little extra TLC, I’ll leave it on as an overnight mask and wake up with much happier skin. It’s a little pricey, but it’s totally worth it.

This is going to sound intense but I take essence really seriously. I noticed a huge change in my skin and the effectiveness of my other skincare products when I introduced layering an essence into my skincare routine. La Mer Treatment Lotion is honestly non-negotiable at this point, I’ve had bottles and bottles of this stuff in rotation for almost two years – I’ve never looked back. My skin gets dehydrated quite easily, so layering with hydration is an absolute must. It’s made my skin crazy soft and bouncy. Definitely more on the luxe side but 100 per cent worth it!

The Ole Henrikson Dark Spot Toner was also surprisingly enjoyable! This one took me by surprise since my skin has a love-hate relationship with glycolic acid. The super pleasant formula didn’t dry out my skin and was more gentle than other exfoliating toners I’ve used before.

Now on to my hold grail SPF products – the Ultra Violette Queen Screen and the Ultra Violette Supreme Screen! These were a game-changer for me and I really wonder what on Earth I did before they came into my life. Ninety-five per cent of all SPFs I’ve used in the past have either left a grey cast on my skin, broken me out or both. These were the first to actually hydrate my skin, not leave a strange discoloured cast and add a healthy glow. They’re safe to wear under makeup and don’t feel heavy at all. My forever SPF baes!

I have recently finished my second bottle of Medik8’s White Balance Brightening Serum from Dermal Hub. You know when you just know what you skin does and doesn’t love? Well my skin absolutely LOVES this serum. With its clean minimal design and easy-to-apply dropper, this serum has been apart of my daily routine for the past four months consistently.

I’ve found that it’s one of the best vitamin C serums I’ve tried that keeps my skin smooth and improves complexion. It’s super lightweight and doesn’t leave any oily residue so can easily be worn under makeup.
