From French bobs to mullet-esque shags.

Recently, I’ve been going through a bit of an identity crisis. From my wardrobe to my appearance, everything just doesn’t hit the way it used to. I’ve always liked switching up my look (I call it ‘customising my avatar’), and I had the overwhelming urge to do so a couple of weeks ago.

This led to impulsively cutting my own bangs, which is something I absolutely should not have done. We have hairdressers and hair stylists for a reason – they’re the experts.

So while I wait for my fringe to grow out once again (getting bangs is a cycle that reoccurs every few years), I decided to ask eight hairdressers what their most-requested haircuts have been so far this year. Consider this inspiration for your next hairdresser appointment – instead of when you’re having a midnight menty B.

The ’70s fringe with soft layers is totally timeless. So many people suit a fringe that is split in the middle – it covers some of the forehead but not all of it. The soft shag is another popularly requested cut with lots of layers and a layered fringe. It shows off the excellent natural texture your hair has, but you need the right hair texture to fully pull this off.

Wolf cuts are incredibly popular this year, especially because everyone who comes to our salon doesn’t want to style their hair at home. You need a good haircut to have low-maintenance hair. If we create the shape and style well, then the rest is easy.

The most requested style I’ve been asked to create would definitely be that ’90s layered look. It’s all about creating effortless texture and movement in the hair. This style often features multiple layers from above the shoulders, continuing to the ends. The goal is to achieve a voluminous, tousled natural-looking effect.

Clients are loving it styled either with rollers or diffused-dried to enhance their natural wave. We’ve definitely moved away from blunt lines. I have also been reaching for my razor a lot lately to create some cool, chic French bobs for those short-hair lovers.

I have been doing a lot of haircuts and styles lately that enhance natural texture and are a little more delicate looking in the hair. Styles like shags and highly layered haircuts, but much softer and seamless to what we have been seeing in the last few years. It’s the next evolution of the shag/mullet trend I’d say. Think wispy fringes, gentle framing layers, and soft texture.

Layered haircuts are definitely a staple style, but it comes in waves and variations depending on fashion trends. Right now, it’s effortless hair that is going to accentuate natural movement and be easy to do on a daily basis, as well as grow out seamlessly between haircuts.

The most requested style cut we have seen in the chair this year would definitely be the curtain bangs. Curtain bangs are a timeless style of fringe; they soften the face… without being a clumsy, solid fringe.

Curtain bangs frame the face with a shorter length at the top, graduating down to a longer length [and] parted in the centre – but can definitely be parted on the side. When styled correctly they will flick back and add softness to your face.

Our clients are loving their curtain bangs because they are easy to grow out and they are on trend. I think they will be hanging around for a while!

Charlene Fernandez, hairstylist, educator and colourist

In the past year, my most requested haircuts have been ones that are shorter, heavily layered and generally incorporate a fringe of some sort. The word ‘shag’ could broadly sum up what I’m talking about, but it’s really this kind of vibe on many different lengths and hair types.

People are getting bold with shape, moving into wider and more voluminous silhouettes. Fringes are being used to open up the face and help people obtain a wash-and-wear look.

Overall I have seen my clients get more free and expressive with how they wear their hair. I believe this is part of a bigger societal piece, one of owning who we are and living in and for the now. I’m here for it!

Amanda Nedza and Ellie Hodgens, hairdressers and Owners of Saint Rose Salon

The ’90s flick haircut and blow dry with full body is making a huge return, bringing back the era of timeless style. This iconic look, made popular by Cindy Crawford and the ’90s supermodels, is now trending once again – especially with the release of the new Barbie movie.

The cut features layers that frame the face, while the blow dry adds volume and movement. It’s a combination of timeless styling with a contemporary edge and we’re obsessed!

Shorter hairstyles and fringes are super trendy. There are different variations – from the most radical ones like the French bob to the longer, shoulder-length bob styles. The short wolf cut is one of these more requested shoulder-length styles and it has a masculine touch – as it is based on a well-shredded mullet.

Shaggy hair is another type of cut that’s very popular and has a medium length. Its main feature is that the strands are cut in layers and are well peaked at the front.

I have to say there is no particular style or cut that is highly requested, and there hasn’t been for many years. We live in such a diverse world today, which is exciting for us stylists… our creativity is not limited! We see more individualism rather than fad-pack mentality styles and fashions.

Each year we see a splash of an era being recycled more so with fashion, and some will follow with a hairstyle to match. But one stands out for me at the moment… a splash of the ’70s [with] beautiful, big, bouncy blow waves… [or] soft curls or waves… A touch of Farrah Fawcett!

It’s very classical, feminine, timeless and a much softer look… I personally love the look. And of course, the most popular requested hair colour is still blonde.
