Send nudes.
The truth is, there’s no such thing as a ‘universal nude’. It changes based on skin tone, but also skin type, complexion, the coverage wanted and what type of ‘nude’ you’re going for.
We like nosy people. Don’t be shy, head to our Beauty section for more.
But these top picks from five Australian makeup artists can help you navigate the minefield that is the nudes section of your favourite makeup stop.

Name of product: Mac Cosmetics Matte Lipstick in Velvet Teddy
RRP: $30.00
Where to get it: Mac Cosmetics
What’s it like and what makes it great: The colour is a peachy beige and I find it works beautifully on all skin tones. It’s one of Mac Cosmetics’ classic best sellers and once you try it you will know why. It has a creamy matte finish.

Name of product: Bounce Matte in Lust by Nabla Cosmetics
RRP: $25
Where to get it: Nabla Cosmetics
What’s it like and what makes it great: The Bounce Matte lipstick will surely become your favourite matte nude lipstick of all time. Not too brown nor too pink! It is just the perfect shade that matches every light/medium skin tone. It is also not sticky and never dries out, which is a great add-on and one of the reasons why I believe it is a must-have product. For darker skin tones, I would use Whirl lipstick by Mac Cosmetics combined with the Whirl lip pencil.

Name of product: Mac Lipstick in Viva Glam V
RRP: $30.00
Where to get it: Mac Cosmetics
What’s it like and what makes it great: Not a universal nude (because there’s no such thing – what’s nude on a porcelain complexion is not the same on a rich ebony skin tone), but rather a universal neutral! Viva Glam V is a perfect warm rosy brown with a subtle pearl that livens up any face; just adjust your lip liner shade to best suit your undertones. To amp the look up, top it with Fenty’s equally universally flattering shimmering caramel Gloss Bomb in Fenty Glow ($31.00 at Sephora).

Name of product: Bobbi Brown Nourishing Lip Colour in Rose Petal
RRP: $47.00
Where to get it: Bobbi Brown
What’s it like and what makes it great: It’s the perfect colour to add to your natural makeup application. It has the right amount of everything, sheen, moisture and pigment. It evens out your natural lip colour if you want to keep it sheer, or you can build the colour up by adding more to the centre of your lips. I like to add a little product to my fingers and add it to the cheeks, it’s great as a blush! it brings a little flushed effect to the face and quickly freshens up your makeup with its soft luminous shine.
