The best vintage ads from Maybelline

Maybelline turns 100 so we took a trip down memory lane.

Can you believe Maybelline turns 100 this year?

We’re not sure if you know the story of its beginning but it’s a pretty fabulous one.

1913. Chicago. Babe called Mabel Williams was in love with a man who was in love with another woman. She was pretty determined to win him over so she applied soot from an oil lamp to her lashes and brows to darken them and amp up her appeal.

Her younger brother and chemist, Thomas, was afraid she would go blind so he formulated a safer mix of carbon dust and Vaseline.

And Maybelline’s first product was born. The Lash-Brow-Ine was launched in 1915 through mail order. Oh and Mabel got the guy.

We compiled a little timeline of Maybelline’s best vintage ads from the past 100 years. It’s a pretty fascinating look into the evolution of beauty products, the trends of each era, and what their marketing was all about.

Enjoy.
