I’m a notoriously nosy person when it comes to products. I want to know whether you double cleanse at night, and if so which cleansers you use. I want to know if there’s some special hair contraption or pair of tweezers that have (hyperbole warranted) changed your life. I want to know what curl definer you use and which lip balm you swear by.

But my interest in products doesn’t just pertain to the world of beauty – I’m always eager to hear about an air fryer that someone loves so much they’ve convinced their entire extended family to get one, or a laptop stand that’s corrected their posture and improved their quality of life by at least 25 per cent.
In short, I adore products. This is why I’ve asked some of our favourite Australian beauty and skincare influencers for their top three products, AKA the products they simply cannot live without. The scope is broad – it can genuinely be any three products, as long as they’re the three they value the most.
Joining us this week is Davey Rooney, digital creator and the Founder of Australian skincare brand, Boring Without You. With a background in cosmetic science, Davey understands the nitty-gritty of skincare ingredients. How did you first discover this product?
After a trip to Chemist Warehouse, I realised there was nothing specifically for combination skin. I have combo skin. All my friends have combo skin. So, why is there no brand for us? I’d had enough. That’s when I decided to start Boring Without You, the world’s first skincare brand dedicated to combo skin.
What is it and why do you love it?
Our hero product, For Face Sake, is a multi-mask with two formulas in one jar. The soothing jelly calms, hydrates and smooths dry parts of your face, while the whipped butter clears congestion and blackheads on oily parts. It’s a double date for your face.
When I studied cosmetic science, one of the first things I learned was that brands add ingredients at such a low percentage just so they can put them on the label – but it [can do] nothing for your skin. We refuse to do this at Boring Without You, so each ingredient is added at a concentrated dose, and we tell you the percentage. That’s why For Face Sake clears my skin, deeply hydrates and gives me a stunning glow.

Product two: Hada Labo Premium Gold Serum

How did you first discover this product?
A follower and friend introduced me to this product. From the moment I tried it, I was in love. Hada Labo is the number one skincare brand in Japan, with an extensive focus on hydration, non-sensitising formulas and making your skin healthy.
What is it and why do you love it?
It’s a humectant-filled serum with a silky, emollient texture that glides onto your skin. It has a wonderful spreadability, leaving your face feeling hydrated, soothed and glowing. I love the use of hydroxyethyl urea. It’s similar to the gold-standard skin-hydatror, glycerin, but without the tackiness when used at a high dose.

The serum is also massive. I’m talking 170ml huge. Like, what serum do you know this big? It will last forever! You can find this at Lila Beauty, and it’s perfect for anyone who needs some extra hydration.
Product three: Conserving Beauty Conserve You Face Oil

How did you first discover this product?
I’ve never been a big fan of oils, but this product changed everything for me. I saw the brand online and am obsessed with the founder, Natassia. She has a science background and is a sustainability queen. Seriously, she knows so much.
What is it and why do you love it?
I use this oil as the last step in my routine to give a natural, healthy glow and people always tell me how nice, young and bright my skin looks. A mix of lightweight oils helps reinforce your barrier and lock in moisture, while bisabolol provides a rich luminosity. It’s a delight.
Where can we find it and who would you recommend it to?
