Skinimalism: Dermatologists share their top three products for a simplified routine

AS TOLD TO MARYEL SOUSA

“For luminous, resilient skin.”

I’ve accidentally developed a bit of a reputation for being a lazy beauty girl. What can I say? I like to take it easy. If I can get loose curls and dewy skin in five steps or less, it’s a resounding yes from me. Recently, I’ve been thinking about how to maximise the benefits of my skincare routine with fewer serums, essences and toners. Which products are fluff and which are the gold standard?

In pursuit of a minimalist skincare routine (skinimalism, if you will), I reached out to four professionals to help me narrow down the holy trinity of skincare products. I was particularly interested in the all-arounder products, those that address common concerns such as dryness, acne and ageing. Below are their top three recommendations for great skin with minimal effort.

Before we get into it, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that, regardless of the products recommended here, every single dermatologist enthusiastically reminded me that there’s no point using anything on your skin if you don’t start every day with sunscreen. It doesn’t just increase the efficacy of other products and reduce signs of ageing, it protects you from skin cancer – a diagnosis two in three Australians will face in their lifetime. Don’t forget to apply yours today!

Neostrata Restore PHA Facial Cleanser

AHAs and BHAs are well known but polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) are the unsung heroes of skincare. Gluconolactone, a popular PHA, has a larger molecular structure that superficially penetrates the skin to exfoliate and hydrate – great for addressing anti-ageing and dry skin concerns.

Skinceuticals Metacell Renewal Skin Tightening Cream

This is a one-size-fits-all product, suitable for all skin types. Niacinamide regulates sebum production, making it an excellent choice for individuals who struggle with acne. It’s also beneficial for dry skin, as it can help strengthen the skin barrier. Additionally, niacinamide helps to boost collagen production and improve skin elasticity. Skinceuticals’ offering contains peptides, making it an excellent collagen booster, which is reflected in its higher price point.

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Pro+ 0.5%

I recommend this with a caveat: Be careful using retinol if you have dry or sensitive skin. Retinol is the weakest of the retinoids and is effective in stimulating collagen, preventing fine lines and reducing acne breakouts. However, retinol can cause flaking and redness, so it’s important to follow your retinol application with a moisturiser. The brand of retinol matters less than the strength – try starting with no more than 0.3 per cent or 0.5 per cent.
