WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE

From a writer who’s tried more products than most.

I’m a notoriously nosy person when it comes to products. I want to know whether you double cleanse at night, and if so which cleansers you use. I want to know if there’s some special hair contraption or pair of tweezers that have (hyperbole warranted) changed your life. I want to know what curl definer you use and which lip balm you swear by.

But my interest in products doesn’t just pertain to the world of beauty – I’m always eager to hear about an air fryer that someone loves so much they’ve convinced their entire extended family to get one, or a laptop stand that’s corrected their posture and improved their quality of life by at least 25 per cent.

In short, I adore products. This is why I’ve asked some of our favourite Australian beauty and skincare influencers for their top three products, AKA the products they simply cannot live without. The scope is broad – it can genuinely be any three products, as long as they’re the three they value the most.

Joining us this week is Fashion Journal’s very own Assistant Editor, Izzy Wight. As an office, FJ has a constant influx of new products and beauty brands coming across our desks. A lover of relaxed, undone hair and makeup, Izzy’s tried more curl creams, bronzers and mascaras than most. Here are her favourites.

Product one: Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion

How did you first discover this product?

I’ve been using this product for years, so it’s hard to remember how it first got on my shelf. I’m fairly certain it was my friend (who also has excellent hair) Acacia, who had it recommended to her through a Melbourne salon. In the years since, I’ve gotten so many wavy-haired friends hooked on this stuff.

What is it and why do you love it?

I’m a super low-maintenance gal when it comes to hair, so I really need a product that can do it all. The Motion Lotion is a frizz controller, volumizer and curl cream, all rolled into one light-blue bottle. When my hair is wet, I take a small amount in my hands and scrunch to give it that beach waves look. It never feels heavy, crunchy or too ‘done’ – it moves with the hair, which I love.

Where can we find it and who would you recommend it to?

You can purchase a bottle at Adore Beauty here. I’d recommend it to those with wavy-to-curly, medium-weight hair. Some friends with finer tresses have said it tends to weigh the hair down, so keep that in mind!

Product two: Fluff Bronzing Powder

How did you first discover this product?

I first picked this up after receiving a ‘makeunder’ at the old Fluff store on Gertrude Street (Fluff is now solely online). With the way the makeup artist was applying this bronzer so liberally, I truly thought I’d be giving Geordie Shore – but I walked out with a natural, sunkissed glow.

What is it and why do you love it?

It’s a refillable bronzing powder, housed in Fluff’s signature weighty, mirrored packaging. The shade ‘Golden’ is perfect for my pale skin and I essentially apply it all over, with extra concentration on the cheekbones, nose and eyes (yep, it’s a shadow too). I love my makeup to be relatively unfussy, and this bronzer gives a lit-from-within glow without the effort.

Where can we find it and who would you recommend it to?

To purchase, you’ll need to sign up on the Fluff site to be notified of future drops. As a brand, Fluff is all about thoughtful, responsible, multi-use products. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a bronzed glow – it also comes in a few shades to suit different skin tones.

Product three: Milk Makeup Kush Mascara

How did you first discover this product?

This one’s a little nostalgic for me. I discovered the Kush Mascara after receiving it from Milk Makeup for one of my first-ever Fashion Journal interviews. I’ve loved Milk as a brand for a long time, and it was a pinch-me moment to chat with its Founder, Zanna Roberts Rassi.

What is it and why do you love it?

It’s an ultra-volumising mascara made from hemp-derived cannabis oil and vegan ‘beeswax’. My mascara pet peeves are flakiness and transferring, and this does neither – just offers falsie-like effects that last through long days at the office (and beyond). Like the Fluff bronzer, its packaging is a weighty metal, making it feel expensive and cool to the touch.

Where can we find it and who would you recommend it to?

You can purchase it from Sephora here. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants long, fluffy lashes!
