The best at-home treatment masks, according to Australian hair stylists
AS TOLD TO DAISY HENRY
“If your strands are thirsty, this is their tall drink of water.”
More often than not, I’ve been waking up in the mornings with the most deranged hair – it looks frizzy, matted and my curls end up pointing in every possible direction. On good days, I can tame it with a glossy hair oil. But more commonly, I’ve been pulling it back into a claw clip and hoping tomorrow will be different.
We like nosy people. Don’t be shy, head to our Beauty section for more.
It’s in these trying times that I know I need to call for backup and invest in a good, at-home hair mask. To help comb through (mind the pun) by all the different options out there, I turned to four Australian hairdressers and asked them for their all-time favourite hair masks.
Oribe Deep Treatment Masque

Picked by: Michael Kelly, Founder of Salon Her
Two words: Holy Grail. If there’s one treatment I always come back to, both for my clients and myself, it’s the Oribe Moisture and Control Deep Treatment Masque. I don’t recommend a lot for at-home unless I know it truly works. This one does.
It’s rich, reparative and deeply hydrating, especially for curls, coils, or anyone with hair that tends to feel thirsty or stressed. It softens the hair from the inside out, restores elasticity and makes detangling feel effortless. I see the difference immediately when clients have been using this. The hair behaves better, feels stronger and most importantly, keeps its integrity between salon visits.
It’s the kind of product that becomes a ritual. Once a week, left on while you’re unwinding or in the shower, you can feel it working. I stand by it fully and recommend it to almost every guest who sits in my chair needing reinvigoration. It’s a luxury that earns its place.

Evo The Great Hydrator Moisture Mask

Picked by: Jess Henderson, Education Manager at Cream
Let’s talk hydration. You know those days when your hair just feels over it? Dry, dull, maybe a little crispy? That’s when I reach for the Great Hydrator Moisture Mask by Evo and trust me, it’s a game-changer.
This mask is like a patient friend (yep, Evo said it best). It doesn’t rush results – it sinks in, soaks up and leaves your hair feeling genuinely loved. It’s rich but not heavy, intensely hydrating but never greasy. It’s ideal for dry, coarse, colour-treated or heat-styled hair. Basically, if your strands are thirsty, this is their tall drink of water.
I’ve used it on clients and myself and every time, it gives bounce, shine and that soft, touchable texture that feels like real hair health not just a cover-up. Use it once a week. Pop it on, take a moment (glass of wine optional) and rinse it out for silky, salon-level results at home.

This exceptional mask provides an intensive anti-dryness treatment, working to deeply hydrate, nourish and revitalise the hair fibre from within. The result is hair that feels incredibly soft, looks beautifully shiny and is remarkably easy to brush through. We recommend the Alfaparf Nutritive Mask for a wide range of hair types and styles, and it has proven to be particularly effective even for our clients with coily textured hair. We also appreciate that it boasts a vegan formula, has a very lightweight feel, is gentle on the scalp, and has a delightful fragrance that our clients often compliment.

Original Mineral Clean.Tone Colour Treatment

Picked by: Jaye Edwards, owner of Edwards and Co
The Original Mineral Clean.Tone Colour Treatment is the ultimate at home mask for maintaining fresh, salon quality colour between appointments. It revives tone, boosts shine, and deeply conditions in one step.
This mask is designed to refresh and enhance natural or coloured hair, it deposits a gentle tint while restoring moisture, making it perfect for blondes wanting to neutralise brassiness or brunettes looking to enrich depth and tone. With a clean, ammonia free formula, it’s suitable for all hair types, especially dry, dull, or colour treated hair in need of a pick me up.
It comes in eight different shades, so there’s an option for everyone! I love it because it’s quick, effective and gives clients that ‘just left the salon’ finish at home. It’s a toner and treatment all in one. Just apply to clean, towel dried hair from the mids to ends and let it sit for three minutes before thoroughly washing until the water runs clear. It’s so simple and you’re left with beautiful results. Use this mask every two to three weeks and extend the colour deposit to up to 10 minutes for maximum results!

Kevin Murphy Restore

Picked by: Becc Snow, owner of Alchemy
My most highly recommended at-home hair treatment would be the Re.Store Cleansing Masque from Kevin Murphy. I love this because it’s such a multi-use hair treatment, it adds intensive hydration back into the hair whilst building strength back into the hair shaft – two things the hair needs most to be at its healthiest!
The extra bonus to this treatment is that it’s also a cleansing conditioner, so you can use it in between shampoos to treat and repair your hair as a one-stop-shop product that will leave your hair gently cleansed after use. Perfect for those with highly porous or damaged hair. We sell the full repair range (including this treatment) at Alchemy in salon or online, feel free to pop in and ask us about it in person!
