10 minutes with photographer Jeremy Blincoe

Chasing winters.

Over the last couple of months, we’ve introduced you to online marketplace and champion of emerging designers, Aliceisback.

The e-retailer has been very busy this month, teaming up with musician Maya Hirasedo and photographer Jeremy Blincoe to showcase a bunch of arrivals for the festive season.

In between shooting the new editorial, we sat down with Jeremy to chat Aliceisback, chasing winters and religious mythology.

How did you get into photography?

Around 2003, I was living in Wanaka, in the South Island of New Zealand. I had been skiing for a number of years, ‘chasing winters’. Driving up the access road of Treble Cone ski area, I spotted a camera. It had been abandoned in the dust. It was a panoramic point-and-shoot. I began photographing friends and landscapes, and my love for photography grew from there.

Tell us a little about your photography style.

My photography is driven by a love of stories. As a child, I enjoyed reading fairy tales, then I moved on to science fiction and now I have been engrossed in some of the oldest stories of all, religious mythology. It is this love of stories that drives me to construct narrative images rather than simply document the world as it appears.

Tell us about how this collab with Aliceisback came about?

[Founder] Monica and her husband have been amazing supporters of my artistic practice for many years now, so I jumped at the chance to collaborate on a shoot. I am drawn to nature in all my work and chose to shoot in Wilsons Promontory for its diverse and majestic beauty.

What’s the one body of work you’ve been most proud of?

I don’t tend to dwell too much on past work, with so much room for exploration and refinement in my practice I am very focused bringing new ideas into fruition.

What can we expect from you next?

I am currently working on an Indigenous portrait series and my first sculptural/installation-based work, which I am very excited about.
