The collaboration is a cohesive and creative fusion of the two iconic labels’ unmistakable styles.

Everyone loves a good collab. Not only is it an opportunity to nab yourself a unique piece, but it gives designers a chance to shake things up and step outside of their wheelhouse.

So, the news of adidas and Gucci teaming up for a collection has made fashion aficionados a bit giddy. The line debuted on the Exquisite Gucci runway before being revealed in a lookbook last month and now, it’s made its way to Australia.

While the high fashion label and sportswear brand seem like unlikely bedfellows, the collaboration is a cohesive and creative fusion of the two iconic labels’ unmistakable styles.

The joint collection marries Gucci’s effortlessly cool aesthetic and penchant for reviving archival designs with contemporary updates and adidas’ sportswear-meets-streetwear style.

The collaboration has officially launched in Australia and is available now online (though not for long, it’s already selling out). To celebrate, adidas athletes and fashion VIPs went head to head in a table tennis tournament this morning in Sydney in what was perhaps the most stylish sporting match ever.

The likes of Olympic swimming legend Ian Thorpe, Giants captain Stephen Coniglio and model and influencer Mimi Elashiry picked up the racket for the occasion.

The launch reflects the playful energy and athletic roots of the collection, which takes inspiration from decades past – reimagining sporting uniforms in bold, nostalgic colour palettes and retro prints.

The collection features pieces emblazoned with the iconic adidas trefoil symbol accompanied by the Gucci logo, and adidas’ classic three-stripe design infused with Gucci’s instantly recognisable red and green colourway.

The tracksuit is a key feature of the collaboration and is presented in various forms ranging from classic takes on the style to a cropped track jacket with ballooned sleeves and a stand-up collar and a tracksuit-jumpsuit hybrid that looks like it was plucked from the Charlie’s Angels wardrobe department.

The line also comprises an assortment of sweater vests, bowling shirts, bomber jackets, tennis-inspired polos, skirts, shorts, graphic T-shirts, bags, hats, and shoes, each pulling from Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s memories of ’80s and ’90s fashion.

On the accessories front, hats span brightly coloured caps to a neutral leather-look bucket hat and bags range from sporty duffels to a Horsebit 1955 shoulder bag.

With a background in both fashion and movement, Melbourne-based content creator Mimi Elashiry is a big fan of the collection. She points to blue cropped jacket and jogging pants as her favourite pieces.

“I love the melding of retro, sporty and street meets high end,” she explains. “My own personal style weaves my many alter egos and shifts, so this collection is great to mix and match depending on what you are vibing on the day.”

While the designs are a nod to the past, the collection embraces both brands’ dedication to sustainable fashion with the use of planet-friendly fabrics including recycled polyester and nylon, viscose and organic cotton.

Packaging for the collection was also designed with the environment in mind, with all paper and cardboard sourced from sustainably managed forest sources, the use of uncoated paper ensuring packaging is fully recyclable, and shopping bag handles made from regenerated cotton and recycled polyester.

Distinctly fresh yet nostalgic and instantly recognisable through the use of iconic emblems and motifs, the adidas x Gucci collaboration is inventive, fun, and oh so cool.
