WORDS BY IZZY WIGHT

“I don’t dress for the occasion, or the weather, or anybody else. I just wear what feels right at that moment.”

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years), so we’ve introduced a new series Hey, I Like Your Style!, diving into the fashion psyche of our favourite creatives. We’re talking about the good, the bad and the 2007.

While the internet has made our fashion icons feel closer than ever before, even the most effortless of outfits came from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives and lives chronicled in 30-second clips just don’t tell the full story.

These are the stories behind the wardrobes, exploring how we develop our style. There’s a brilliance behind the way we choose to express ourselves and at FJ, we know every outfit has a story.

This week, we’re exploring the wardrobe of Perth-based model, content creator and stylist, Annie Brooks (aka @sausagelord). A kind of contemporary fashion shapeshifter, Annie favours all pieces “polarising, uncomfortable and repulsive”. With a talent for styling the weird and wonderful, her signature platinum blonde plaits, Balenciaga Toe Boots and petrol station sunglasses have amassed over 40,000-plus Instagram followers. Read on for their style journey.

Who are you and what do you like to wear?

I’m Sausagelord. I’m a content creator, stylist and model from Perth. I like to wear items that are polarising, repulsive and comfortable.

What has your style evolution looked like? Do you feel like you’ve gained confidence in the way you dress?

My style evolution has gone from luxury street style to camp-chic to dystopian-Goretex to now… untitled? New style eras for me are born from life events, changes and level-ups throughout my existence. My style evolves by the day!

I gained confidence in the way I dress when I started dressing for myself. I don’t dress for the occasion, or the weather, or anybody else. I just wear what feels right at that moment.

Personal style is a journey. Have you ever felt like you needed to fit into a particular fashion box?

For a short time, I did feel the need to adhere to one particular style. Now I subscribe to no particular style; I dress based on how I feel at that time, the media I’ve been consuming, and what I’m inspired by at that moment. One day I’ll be dressed head to toe in black, the next I’ll be busting ’round in a neon pink tracksuit.

Take us back to those awkward teenage years. Do you have any fashion regrets?

No regrets – just lessons! Like never wearing aqua-diamanté-studded canvas flats again… ever

What are the most expensive and least expensive items in your wardrobe?

My most expensive item is a vintage 1994 Chanel classic double-flap bag purchased on my last trip to Tokyo. The least expensive item(s) would be my vast array of petrol station sunglasses.

What is the most meaningful fashion piece you own?

The most meaningful fashion piece is my vintage Chanel bag. I saved up a long time and manifested it hard before going over to Tokyo. I secured the bag first day of my trip!

Another meaningful piece is my Gucci Hollywood Forever pearl sunglasses. I will never part with them. Last (but certainly not least) is my Rick Owens x Moncler Porterville puffer coat. It’s one of my all-time holy grails; I feel like a final boss-level binch every time I put it on.

What’s in your cart at the moment?

Right now, I have my eye on the Balenciaga platform crocs and the Miu Miu faux fur knee-high boots. Oh, and the Y/Project spiral earrings… currently accepting donations!

What fashion piece are you saving for right now?

I’m saving two pieces: the CDG Jugo Boots (a need, not a want) and the Rick Owens Geth Puffer Coat. I dream of this piece… often.

What are the wardrobe items you wear on repeat?

I have two items that are constantly on repeat: my Balenciaga Toe Boots (bury me in them) and my Vetements Total Darkness Bomber. Imma wear these items to the ground and then repurchase them, again and again.

Who are your favourite local designers?

Jordan Dalah for strong, incredible silhouettes and Jordan Gogos for deadstock materials, gender fluidity, sustainability and structural pieces! Daisy and GarbageTV are also two notable Australian brands.
